Apple exploring purchase of Tidal

Recommended Posts

Tidal, and its bevy of exclusive content, might be snapped up.

Apple is in early talks to acquire the Jay Z-owned streaming service, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. No terms of a potential deal have been reported yet.

Jay Z bought the service in March 2015 and staged a high-profile relaunch press event that featured Beyoncé, Kanye West, Daft Punk, and more signing up for a small piece of ownership.

Tidal, which stands out for its exclusive deals with artists (such as streaming West’s The Life of Pablo album exclusively for over a month), offers a high-fidelity streaming option for $19.99 per month. It also offers a $9.99 monthly deal, similar to competitors at Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play Music, and more.

Apple’s reported interest in Tidal comes one year after Apple Music launched. The streaming service has upward of 15 million subscribers, about half as many as Spotify boasts. Tidal claims over 4 million paying subscribers.

Apple declined to comment. Tidal and Jay Z’s reps have not responded to EW’s request for comment.
