indiechingu 1,242
Most people nowadays are too afraid to give their true opinions on a certain topic, or say what they're really thinking, out of fear of being attacked by society. Do you think that being too pc can harm individual thoughts and opinions?

Joga 1,315
If you speak your opinions into a public venue you should expect others to speak their own opinions at you in return. Boiling this down to political correctness just makes one side look like whiners and the other side look like bigots.

Nanners 1,054
Yes, and I don't like the idea of people not being able to say an unpopular opinion without getting attacked, especially physically
glow 2,321
I think people who purposely have non pc opinions discourage independent thought. Usually those people are closed minded and just don't want to respect others. They're the ones who need to re-evaluate their opinions
Sephiroth 3,892
being "politically correct" is usually just like ... being respectful of people so if thats harming your individual opinion then it was probably a shitty opinion and idc to hear it
indiechingu 1,242
i don't really care if a bigot is encouraged not to express thoughts or opinions that harm the health and livelihood of others tbh ummm no, it doesn't always have to do with hate, it's to do with thinking that everyone should have the exact same opinion as you (this mostly leans to the extreme left) and anyone who expresses otherwise is automatically labelled as a bigot. Like people can't even say which body type they prefer (without bringing any other body type down) without people labeling them as a bigot and stopping them from expressing their view What opinions do you have that you are afraid to voice, OP? none, I say what I think
ocean berry 290
it's always people with really shitty opinions that complain about "political correctness" lmao like... if you say something stupid then other people are allowed to react to that. free speech goes both ways

delirium 4,237
A lot of people are still confusing pc with just being kind and that's not what modern/extreme pc is now. When someone literally calls the cops on someone because they hurt their "feelings"-that's an example of what pc has become, that's a problem and it's getting worse. Yes, it definitely encourages the application of group think and shuns anyone and thing who questions or doesn't fall into line with the ever-shifting or popular status quo. Tyrants have risen and thrived off of ths type of behavior.
kay 4,312
i think political correctness as it is used in the US is complete bullshit and doesnt actually exist. As far as Im concerned, I have yet to see people as a society feel too afraid of voicing their opinions regardless of how racist, homophobic, sexist, and just generally shitty they are. The reality is that people who hold certain views like to label any progress in society as people being "politically correct" because their tiny little brains cant comprehend that people can actually change, that society by definition shapes the people within it, that someone can engage in discourse about any given topic and come out of it a better or worse person. I think the fact that people buy into the political correctness fallacy is the definition of group think. Any time there is a concept that describes and attempts to rationalize the behavior of large groups of people in an attempt to harmonize that behavior with a person/groups own beliefs, you can pretty much bet its an example of group think. Hyoyo 108
Most people nowadays are too afraid to give their true opinions on a certain topic, or say what they're really thinking, out of fear of being attacked by society. Do you think that being too pc can harm individual thoughts and opinions? Yes, it discourages people from sharing opinions that may challegen others. If you label everything that challenges your opinions and morals as bigotry, well, I'm sorry, but the world doesn't pander to what you(not talking about you op using you as in anyone) need. 2016 is the era of censorship. It encourages the hive mind mentality. It's preventing a lot of discussion and it's just really toxic. If someone has an opinion, let them share it, maybe you can try and figure out why they would think like that. Don't bash people or shut them up just because you don't like what they're saying. Not only is 2016 the era of censorship, it's also the era of narcissm and trending victim complexes. Let people have their opinions. If you don't like it, try and discuss their opinion with them. "Educate" them, as that's the buzzword that's being used.
Ziggyly 1,479
Do you think that being too pc can harm individual thoughts and opinions? Wanting to conform to societal pressures isn't a bad thing. It fosters communal bonds. But being too pc can be hard on oneself because of the conflict in interests.
Swiss 935
Politcal correctness: the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against. I'm so bored of this rhetoric. Being PC isn't "bad". If you're having to censor yourself because of fear of voicing your opinion, your opinion probably sucks. Boooohooo, I can't say racist/sexist/homophobic crap without fear of reprisal. Most people will voice their opinions regardless if they are slightly controversial if they're actually logically sounds. It's called discourse and takes place all the time.
