China's television regulator on Sunday issued strict limits on foreign-inspired TV programs in a bid to boost innovation of homemade programs.

Overseas programs with imported copyrights are not allowed to be broadcast on satellite TV channels without the approval of local regulators and a complete filing procedure, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) said in a notice.

Chinese satellite TV channels in recent years copied the models of a number of foreign TV programs by importing the copyrights, making them popular TV programs in the country.

For instance, the Running Man broadcast in Zhejiang TV Channel copied an entertainment program of SBS TV in the Republic of Korea, and another popular program, The Voice of China, was inspired by The Voice of Holland.

The broadcast of those foreign-inspired programs should be firstly put on records in local provincial regulators two months in advance, and the local regulators will report to the SAPPRFT after approving.

All satellite TV channels are allowed to broadcast only two programs with imported copyrights during the prime time from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. every year. Only one new program is allowed to broadcast every year, but it cannot be broadcast during the prime time in the first year, the notice said.

Since July 1, newly-imported TV programs will be banned from being broadcast immediately if it is not put on records as the notice asks. Furthermore, this TV channel will be banned from broadcasting any foreign-inspired programs in one year.

The SAPPRFT said the new regulation came as many TV channels rely on foreign programs, with little original ones. The new regulation will boost self-innovation of Chinese TV channels.

Only self-innovated TV programs with Chinese cultural inheritance and characteristics can better carry the Chinese Dream themes, the socialist core values, as well as patriotism and Chinese fine traditions, the notice said, adding that those homemade programs can tell Chinese stories and advocate Chinese spirit better.

The SAPPRFT urged all TV institutions to view original programs as the core of their work, especially increasing the proportion of original programs in prime time in the evening.

That Running Man photo with Luhan <3

Anyway, what does this mean for Running Man? I'm slightly confused. I hope it won't be cancelled...

All satellite TV channels are allowed to broadcast only two programs with imported copyrights during the prime time from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. every year.

Zhejiang TV only have 2 imported series: Running Man and The Voice of China.

The Voice of China have been officially rebranded as Sing China 2016 so they have one more slot to fill.

So Running Man China is 100% safe.

It's important to improve China's cultural warfare capabilities.

Here is the famous paper on such activities.

http://www.c4i.org/unrestricted.pdf

Basically cultural exports are part of modern war. For instance filling Venezuala with Mcdonalds and KFC is a big strategic victory for America.  If everyone in China is consuming American Media, then USA has more power/influence on the country. etc

China is developing it's own cultural warfare capabilities by investing in Movies, games, and other Chinese-culture media.

They have made humongous investments in growing China's cultural power.  If people grow up watching Chinese movies and seeing Chinese media, they will have much more friendly views towards the country. Which has lots of extra effects when it comes to trade, product exports, international support, etc.

KPOP is supported by the Korean government for the same reason. It's kind of like why Russia has RT in so many foreign countries.  Information/culture warfare is extremely important.

Supposibly Hu Ge is joining Ode to joy 2

That's true? I'm so excited!

Been a fan of Hu Ge since CP 1 aka his first drama. He is my most fav C-actor. But I think he won't have much screen times, consider Jin Dong or Wang Kai in S1. Ode To Joy really doesn't need men.

Yeah right.... to allow more innovative and original content from home when they just banned shit tons of theme for the local production to produce interesting drama/movies

No wonder the internet streaming (also webdramas/content produced) become explosive popular nowadays in China...

This restriction is actually pretty easy to bypass, TV stations just need to adapt.

Zhejiang TV is already adapting rather quickly. They've figured out the format of Running Man so they made two more "Running Men" with "24 Hr" feat. Hangeng and "Challenger" feat. Kris Wu/Fan Bing Bing. Both of these shows are getting good rating.

And next season of "The Voice" have brand new formats by changing to "Sing China".

Its just that other TV stations have to figure out a suitable format to mess around with.
