You're forgetting that is unfortunately nothing to most of Korea. They haven't really caught on to that, it's kind of part of the culture there, so yeah. Not a scandal to them.

He didn't know that they were dressing him up like Michael until after they'd already put the makeup and wig on him. He's the rookie on the show and there's no way that he had the power to say no to the PDs. I don't care what anyone else says, he was not in a position where he could have refused to do the segment. Plus, in his mind, he was playing Michael. The addition of the wig, the earrings, and the idea to make it a watermelon CF are at the fault of the Hot Bros writers. I think they knew about these stereotypes. They probably told Gikwang that he was portraying Michael to make it easier for him to do the segment. There's a fine line between doing a caricature and doing an impersonation. Even if he felt like there was something wrong about the segment, if the PDs were telling him that he was portraying a certain character, then how could he refuse given the nature of the show? 

Since the Hot Bros segments all require a lot of impromptu acting, Gikwang and CUBE could not have known beforehand what was to come. I still can't believe how naive people are regarding this whole issue. They're disappointed that he didn't put his foot down and say no. What they're not taking into account is that even if he felt uncomfortable about the segment, he couldn't say no without jeopardizing his job. It might seem like he's being selfish for thinking about his own career, but you have to consider that if he had a rift with MBC, then that could lead to the network not wanting to work with any of the members in BEAST. Any way you slice it, Gikwang was in a difficult position. Plus, when he saw the makeup on his face, it was during the actually segment and cameras were rolling. He's only 20 years old. How could he stop filming (and cost the show money) to complain about the possible political incorrectness of the segment if everyone around him is telling him that he's playing Michael? Don't want to tear down another idol to defend him, but this isn't the same as those other instances where a Kpop idol has said something racist on their own volition. Gikwang didn't put the makeup on his face and he didn't come up with this watermelon CF scenario. He was a bit player on a show that puts a lot of emphasis on improv. In general, tolerance isn't a huge part of the Korean educational curriculum. I don't think I'm overstating things when I say that the viewers that watched that segment didn't see anything racist about it. I just hope that word somehow got back to Gikwang and that he's more aware of this issue now.
