Relationship bans and Idols. Why is unique to JPOP and how effective is it?

Johnny Entertainment's success is well respected and feared for a variety of reasons. Basically putting down the framework that all idol agencies in Japan. One of Kitagawa's key tenants is to forbid the idols from taking part in any romantic relationship so long as they are idols. Enforcing it with kicking troublemakers, sudden graduations or outright demotions. This has kept their talent in line and able to stay together for a long time as we have seen with SMAP and Arashi who despite being middle aged men are still single heart throbs.

Or we look at AKB48's dating ban and some of the biggest examples made, Minegishi was perhaps the first time we learn about how one is so desperate to atone that the demotion was not enough, shaving her hair as a penance on top of the apology. Or Mayuyu and Yukirin's traditionalist beliefs and being venerated as ideal idols.

The reason why I brought this up was because of how KPOP handled the dating situation by letting the idols date rather than cut their promotions short and maybe kick a couple of members out of their group as an example of enforcing solidarity. SNSD's dating scandals only made the year of 2014 much worse for the industry as the paparazzi essentially drained SM's patience and ability to manage their talent.

So how come the dating ban has endured in JPOP while KPOP has allowed certain accomdations despite this being an effective form of control for their talents in a world where they must endure extreme fans?

Anyone that thinks their idol has not dated someone or is not dating someone is delusional whether it's jpop or kpop, at the end of the day they are HUMAN and unless they are asexual aromantic they are probably going to fall for someone whether they plan on it or not and it seems Korea has at least somewhat got that by now? Even though there is a huge backlash it's not as huge as jpop it seems.

Dating bans are ridiculous. And it's the fault of the companies - they shouldn't even metion those, all idol should be free to date, and forbidden to spread those "I'm in love with my fan" stupid comments. After a while of intense hatred things would get normal. It's slowly getting like that in Korea I hope, Japan is worse case.

If poeple won't have this expectations and argument like "he's breaking THE RULES" it's gonna be a little bit easier for idols to date.

i don't see how banning dating 'helps' a group to stay together for a long time?

also i don't know much about jpop but how are you 100% sure jpop idols don't date, they can just keep it a secret just like probably 99% of kpop idols do? idk i find it hard to believe that Arashi members have been single since 1999

Kimura Takuya is married with kids though...

I think part of it may be because the shelf life of idols is longer in Japan. When someone becomes a Johnny, they're a Johnny for life, not just for their teens / 20s.

The thing I find really odd is how things are now, when back in the 80s, Akina Nakamori, Seiko Matsuda, and Masahiko Kondo were openly in a love triangle.

It's not really enforced at all tbh.

But also back in the 80s, Onyanko Club had a strict dating ban that would result in contract termination if they were caught. Former members said that they used to have to go on dates in cars and hide under blankets in order to ensure that they would not get caught.

JE allow their idols to date apparently but they're not allowed to get caught.

LMAO. Johnnys never had a dating ban. They're just not allowed to talk about it publicly.  And then there was this:

Yeah....Korean companies invest hundred of thousands training idols for many yrs so obviously they can't kick them out without getting that money back. But they do have dating ban, cell phone monitored, and I'm pretty sure idols would get yell at or some kind of cut back for their scandals so...different situations

Anyway dating ban sounds serious but in actual practice it's really not...Dozens of 48G members got caught dating and like at least half just got ignored...and like Kikuchi Ayaka left the group after her scandal but reauditioned and they took her back. It's really case by case. It's also not that enforced.

JE boys date too....and sometimes 48G and JE boys date each other :imstupid:

OP Johnny's do not have a dating ban. If they get caught, which happens on a regular basis btw, their promotions, concerts, shows, etc. aren't canceled or cut short and they are not kicked out of their groups.

Before Junno quit showbiz, it was well known he had been dating his girlfriend for almost a decade and he was photographed with her multiple times but nothing ever happened to him. Yoko also lived with his girlfriend for ten years and nothing happened, same with Keito whose photos with Arimura were leaked and he continued his activities as always. And when Shukan revealed Fujigaya and Takimoto were dating JE simply said they wouldn't comment on his personal life. What is a fact is that Johnny's do not talk about their girlfriends.

Mostly from news and fandoms talking about dating bans as a vow of Chasity.

There was no news of Johnny's getting kicked out because of dating or that vow of chastity you were talking about. You must have confused them with 48s.

JE got kicked out but it's for smoking or something. It's stricter for female idols and they can leave if they get into scandals but alot of times it gets ignore too. They still date in private anyway which is the same as male idols. News usually focus on sensational scandals than several others where nothing happened like this

And most fans don't expect the girls to stay home all the time. Kojima Haruna fans don't think she's a virgin at 27 :imstupid:

So far the cases of Johnny's getting fired that I know of involves:

- drugs use, Akira Akasaka of Hikaru Genji

- Contract violation, Koki Kat-tun. He was managing a bar. I think their contract stated any business activities that may have profited from their idol status is not allowed.

- smoking underage, Ryutaro Morimoto HSJ ..But I think he dismisses himself rather than was fired? HSJ fans please clarify.

Btw, Jin Akanishi wasn't kicked out but he ended his contract with the jimusho. It was not due to his marriage to Kuroki Meisa. The dude had a couple of international tours before he departed despite being a problematic costly child who abandoned kat-tun.

Demotion cases:

- underage drinking, Uchi Hiroki & Kusano of NEWS

Halted activities:

- hit & run over a policewoman foot, Goro Inagaki SMAP

- drunk & naked in public, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi SMAP

A year driving ban

- All Arashi members because Matsujun skidded on an icy road once and Nino clipped a lady on a bicycle.

Drinking ban (?..not sure if its a rumor or true)

- HSJ members because Yuto grabbed a woman when he was drunk and police was involved. No charges

There was never public/formal disciplinary announcement by the jimusho on members who were caught having girlfriends etc.

Ninomiya Kazunari, popular idol group Arashi's member, collided with a bicycle while driving and caused injury to the female cyclist. The Nakameguro Police Department send its report to the Public Prosecutor's Office under the suspicion of negligent driving causing bodily injury.

The suspected charge was that while driving along an intersection of the Meguro ward around noon on 4 June, he collided with a female cyclist in her 30s, causing light injuries to her leg.

According to the police department, Ninomiya had admitted to the suspicion and also to the fact that he did not pay attention to the front.

As for Arashi, another member, with the succession of accidents in the likes of that in February, where member Matsumoto Jun collided into a vehicle from the back, their management company, Johnnys Entertainment, had passed a ban on driving for all 5 members within the year.
