I am considering getting a Maine coon cat and I just wanted to see if anyone could share their experiences with the breed... like is it considered a lap cat? anything you noticed with this breed that you didn't with others??

I have a bengal cat and hes too hyper active.. I can never have him just sit there and let me pet him :P

I do.

She is hateful. She is very antisocial. She only loves me, and does not take to others at all. The closest anyone has gotten to her besides myself is a few strokes before she hissed and took off in a fright. They are prone to choosing only one person to love and accept, and even with that person have a sensitive side.

I love her. Others to do not. We accept each other and reject others, so we work well together. What you seek from adopting one, is what will decide if a Maine Coon is right for you.

he's so tolerant, lets me snuggle him and stuff unlike my other cats. though i don't know how much that has to do with his breed, maybe because he's a neutered male? idk but maine coons are so beautiful anyway~

honestly the main reason why I even started considering a Maine coon is because we have a bengal cat and hes pretty aggressive.. he bites alot and it hurts.. so I wanted to get him a companion that is capable of fighting back .... and Maine coons are pretty strong from what I've read lol..

Yes, if that was the original goal, a Maine Coon is a proper choice. My Maine Coon is quite vicious and powerful. She is a great hunter. She always brings me 'gifts' which are dead animals she catches, as small as rats and as large as grown rabbits. It can be unpleasant.

We have another cat. A tabby. He is very playful, and she fights him well. Maine Coon would be a good choice for a bengal cat.

thanks! Do you think its better to have a female maine coon or male.. my bengal is a male and hes a rescue.. I've had him since he was 2 weeks old.. I had to bottle feed him and everything like a new born baby >_<  hes also a bit big for his age.. what do you think>/

Maine Coons are very independent but also affectionate.

I volunteer as a coordinator at a feline rescue. Some of the most affectionate cats are ginger/red and tabby cats. Though I found regular rescue cats to be pretty loving. My cow cats (B&W) are 100% lap cats. If you are going for a breed than Russian Blues have a good rep for affectionate/docile.

My tabby is male, also a rescued cat, while my Maine Coon is a female who was born from our previous cat who has now died. I think a female would be best. Male Maine coons are friendlier and bigger, but not as vicious in my experience (we had a male Maine Coon from a previous litter who we adopted out).

I think I'm gonna go with a female too... I didn't want a huge difference in size anyways
