(This is only about Korean rappers.)

I see many underground rappers look down on rappers that chose the idol life and that's because they think idol rappers are not real and look feminine with all that makeup on.

But when it comes to skills, which type of rappers do you think is better and why?

I think it really depends, because both sides have a lot of people. About the criticism, well, like Tablo said, "the irony is that some idol rappers are better than the ones from the underground. I don't think there's a deep meaning to the term, 'idol rapper'".

Basically, if you have skill, then it doesn't matter where you come from.

The only thing that makes underground rappers "better" than idol trained is that there skills are grown organically. They learn to write and free-style by actively being a part of a community and growing. Idols who have never been underground are always going to sound manufactured and that's because they are.

On the flip side, a lot of people considered "idol rappers" were recruited underground. So I feel like the differentiation was just created as another way for people to look down on idols, honestly.

There isn't a definitive answer there. Overall, of course underground rappers are likely better than idol rappers considering many idol rappers aren't good at it and are just given that role within their group.

But there are some idol rappers that could be on par with underground rappers (sometimes from having been underground once themselves). Those idol rappers may have skills on par with or better than some underground rappers.

No. Underground rappers are often really pretentious so that's the drawback IMO. Some are actually good rappers, others aren't.

Idol rappers are fairly pretentious themselves but they usually aren't trying too hard to be something they're not. Likewise, idol rappers usually lack in lyricism because they don't compose their own rap and therefore can't freestyle or anything.

not all of them, but the best of the best underground rappers are indeed killers

and a number of idol rappers are actually just as good, not to mention some of them are recruited from the underground where they wrote their own lyrics, made their own beats, the difference is just they're promoting as an idol (because it sells *cough)

like in a classroom, there are top students, some decent students, and bad students

there are some underground rappers that aren't as good either

they look down on idol rappers who are trained to be rappers just because their company made them so

Would people here read EVERYTHING I wrote before questioning my words

"idol rappers usually lack in lyricism because they don't compose..." USUALLY. Not always. Rap Monster (and Suga?), Zico, Seventeen's rap-line, Mimi from Oh My Girl; they all self-compose and write their own rap lyrics. I appreciate that, and I thought I acknowledged it enough in my original post.

It depends. Some idol rappers are trained to rap while others do it because they like it. Whereas underground rappers like what they are doing (rapping) that's why they chose to do that. But in the end it depends to one's preference. I think generally underground rappers are better when it comes to lyrics and overall rap. But many idol rappers are just as good or even better!! I think overall doing something because you like it trains your to better in it than just doing it because you are trained. In the end, I don't like any idol rapper being hated or disliked by people because he isn't as good in rap as others because he didn't choose to do that but the label trained him to debut as one.

With the exception of some, many idol rappers don't actually write their lyrics. Zico, Rapmon, J-Hope, Suga, Mino, Bobby, B.I, GD, and more write their own raps but that doesn't mean that all idol rappers write their own lyrics. I think she meant the majority of the idol rappers.

Skill and talent don't depend on whether you're underground or mainstream. 90% of underground Korean rappers are just that in name, some people consider them better cause they're "underground" which is pointless since majority are just teenagers or young adults who are in these "crews" and get the prefix "underground" cause they haven't gotten a contract and can't release music other than through mixtapes. Most don't even battle.

There are talented rappers among idols, but because there's a lot of kids who get into these companies and can't sing but have a pretty face and their company puts them in the "rapper" position, those idols who got into their companies and groups through skill and can actually do it, get overlooked and undermined compared to these "underground" rappers, who are basically same as these trainees just don't have contracts, or even idols who have spent some time in the said "underground".

So to answer your question, no I don't think they are automatically better since I've come across plenty of "underground" rappers who suck and are such tryhards it's not even funny. One thing they do have compared to idol rappers is more freedom to cover topics they want to cover in their raps and not having to censor themselves as much.
