My thoughts about Dia's On The Road and the comparison of it to GFriend

Recommended Posts

I have just watched the Music Video for Dia's On The Road and to be honest, I really feel that they have the same 'vibe' with my ultimate bias, GFriend.

Ofcourse, I am aware about the ongoing issue of the same producer. Well, my initial reaction, as a fan, would be to feel a little bit disappointed with the producer since I really want him/her to produce music only with my babies and to see that GFriend have their own signature songs.

Anyways, let's move on. The music is already out and I want to congratulate Dia since On The Road is really a nice song. It is pleasant to the ears and Kpop cute concept is my Achilles' Tendon that's why reaction would be totally on a positive side.

I'm one of the few who will say the On The Road is not similar with Glass Bead-Me Gustas Tu-Rough when comes to the songs itself. The similarities that I can see are just the settings, place, or even the location of the Music Video. After watching the MV, the song that comes out to my mind is GF's Under The Sky and when it comes to MV, it is the GF's Wave for American Tourister.

I maybe a flop GF fan but that's all the similarities I can think between Dia and my babies. Then again, Kudos to both groups! <3

I don't find the songs that similar. DIA's song reminds me a bit AKB48's Green Flash and the choreo is def something they would do just check their debut song, they have always been this energetic.

YAAASSS @ THIS TEA

people were listing best new gen ggs in terms of dancing/energy and i saw rankings excluding dia and i was like ????

Regarding this issue, it's blatant that MBK wanted the Gfriend similarity by using Gfriend's team and well it worked, DIA's song charted pretty well and that's awesome for them. On the other hand, Gfriend fans have the right to call out the similarities they see as they clearly follow Gfriend and know their style, their music, their choegraphy, their Mv, their Mv locations hence they see the obvious similarities, besides the fandom is disappointed in everything BUT DIA, we wish them luck.

i think both you and OP are looking at this from the wrong way in some ways.

1) OP what's disappointing about the producer making a song like this is that it proves he is too unmaliable. Though I personally think that the song is the lesser issue (because it wouldn't have mattered much had the video not been as it was, but I'll get to that later) -- but it does feel like the producer is a one trick pony. NAGL. He stripped DIA of what made them DIA, which was a certain spunkiness, that is seen in both Somehow and MFBF

2) The dance. Yes, DIA has always been energetic, but the problem here is that the choreographer was lazy. They reused dance points that are connected to various GF songs. That is really not fair to DIA. They should be getting dances that make people think of DIA, not another group.

3) The video. Again, a certain level of laziness. Coupled with the dance, there are several visual motifs that reminded me of GF (oddly enough this was not apparent just in the teaser). The director was lazy, and I blame them, not DIA for that.

People think I'm hating on DIA for saying this, but I'm not. If anything I'm disappointed with how lazy and uncreative the concept crew had the nerve to be, especially considering who they were working with. I guess I could also blame MBK for commissioning this sort of CB for DIA, when they had unique and amazing title tracks before. I mean before, if someone said that DIA reminded them if any rookie gg, I would've thought them crazy, because they were unique.

Regardless I'm supporting DIA this CB bc i want them to go back to their unique sound.

The dancing are similar

but hell i care.

I feel like people are going to say Dia copied GFriend and stuff

Like it's Dia's fault -_- Dia aren't the ones who choreographed this so why blame Dia? that is for the people who said Dia copied GFriend.

Not a fan of dia (but a fan gfriend) but it's just not their fault.

Disappointed that producer agreed to make GFriend-esque song.

I know he/she rake up a lot of royalties but his/her originality is no where to be found.

I guess business is business.

somehow is masterpiece.. fit them really well.. OTR is good. but somehow is alot better..
overall its not really similar.. but i can hear under the sky, say my name, rough instrumental in this song..

producer mix and master it. kinda disappointed that the producers originality is nowhere to be found.

i guess mbk requested it. business is a business

The song doesn't sound like GFRIEND tho.. Both songs are really different.. The only thing that is noticeable is some dance moves and the location from Jeju.. The song is good an obvious Iggy x Youngbae masterpiece

Wrong way? I think that everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. Just because we don't think like you, it doesn't mean your way is the right way. And what did you expect? I can name you other groups who used the same producer and their songs sounded  similar: KARA (In The Game) and Stellar (Vibrato); MissA (Only You)  and AOA Cream (Jelly). Does this change the fact that the songs aren't good or enjoyable? DIA is still on their early stages and finding an image. Any other k-pop rookie girl group, in my opinion, isn't that unique. I've been getting into Jpop and the similarities are uncanny. Not going that far their seniors like Apink, SES, SNSD, FinKL had songs with the formula that these rookies have been using.

I said "wrong ways" because some of the things you and OPEN pointed out aren't issues. OP was mad that the gfriend producer is producing for other groups -- how is a producer producing for other groups even an issue? It's not. They need to eat too so it's ridiculous to think they will stick to only one client. They also mentioned how they felt that meant GF would be sharing a sound with another group but I will touch on that point later.

You also pointed out that DIA has always been energetic cute, but again that's not where the comparisons are coming from. If it were then the comparisons would be buried bc all that would need be shown is SH & MFBF. The comparisons are coming from what I listed (sound, dance points, aesthetic).

And where did I say the song wasn't enjoyable? I still like it (tho the other tracks are better). And I said that the song was the last of the issues, considering it wouldn't be a big deal had the choreographer not been lazy.

I'll think we have to agree to disagree on the productions you listed. I've never heard the KARA song but though I know a BEP product when I hear it, Only U and Jelly Baby don't sound the same to me. BEP did a good job of keeping his sound aesthetic while tailoring to the specific group.

I don't agree with all the talks about producer/choreographer being lazy. Pretty sure it is because MBK ask for it. Any similarity with gfriend is most likely not coincidence, but part of the plan. The goal is go gain attention. And it is working, this topic is proof. People who don't care about Dia in the past, start to talk about them. No doubt this will attract some negative attention. But that is better than being ignored.

And personally, I don't think anything is wrong with this kind of strategy. Or go heavy on sexy like Stellar. Even that is good, as long as it works. Gain attention and survive first. You can release good song with your own unique color later, to build up your fan base.

Worst is new group releasing very good song, being ignored and disband soon after. Breaking the heart of the handful of fans.

When one artist experiences success with a certain sound/concept/look, other artists will try to replicate that success. Nothing new. It's the same reason that a bunch of girl groups did sexy concepts after Sistar, Girl's Day and AOA all hit it big.

DIA's fans can stop denying the intent here--we all know MBK is trying to ride the coattails of Gfriend's recent success. And Gfriend fans can get over the fact they're doing it because Gfriend did the same thing during Glass Bead. Such is the way the industry operates. Short of actually plagiarizing a song, it's all fair game.

yeah true, i agree. I never denied DIA new song sound like GF (for me more sound like SNSD debut song with rap included) but some of GF stans keep accuse DIA copy this copy that, in every DIA thread make me like "you guys also like that when debut right" LOL.

also people should know this, there is no plagiarizing issues when the same producer make that song. LOL.

idk how i feel about this.

cus  A LOT of those moves were blatant copy of Gfriend moves...

not just 1 or 2... where it can just be brushed off as coincidence..but  A LOT.

as far as i'm concerned this is worse than the chinese GG who "plagiarized" Gfriend.

But i guess it reflects just how desperate MBK is.. and you know what they say. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

"Article" from Allkpop about this issue.

DIA is asked about similarity to G-Friend during showcase

During DIA's showcase for 'Happy Ending' on June 14, the girls addressed the similarities between their recent comeback and G-Friend's concepts briefly. When told, "The new song is similar to G-Friend's song," leader Eunice said, "When we first heard it while preparing it, we likewise thought that it was similar to senior, G-Friend. However, we will work hard in order to emit it with an atmosphere unique to DIA."

Not referencing the choreo. One leg kick move does not mean anything. The Glass Bead concept and sound was meant to allude to ITNW though, and everyone noticed. And like I said, there's nothing wrong with it, that's one of the ways to grab attention in this industry.

GF also similar to SNSD's ITNW, so? your statement full of hate. No one denied some part similar with GF when they use same composer as them. but you put plagiarized/blatant copy as your stand, that also reflect to GF also when their song similar to SNSD. please be rational. Fan like you will make other fans uncomfortable.
