Do You Have Conservative Views?

Micah Bell

I have a few conservative views. I don't dress in revealing clothing (that includes swimsuits, I'll always cover up with something), and I don't practice sex with random people or some guy I'm dating that I've only known for a few months, and I don't like the idea of bouncing around from one relationship to another.

Other than those I'm more on the liberal side.

Are you a conservative or simply have a few conservative views?

If so, what are they?

First, you have to step back and ask what "conservative" means.

A conservative is someone who feels it is important to preserve certain elements of his or her culture.  Even a Swedish progressive can be described as a "conservative" if he or she wants to preserve the welfare state that Sweden is known for.  Watch the American Left, now - in defense of failed economic schemes like the Affordable Care Act, they have suddenly become the most conservative people you have ever seen.

Many who are described as conservatives simply want to conserve what they perceive is good about their lives and cultures, and defend those things from changes they deem to be negative or threatening.

For myself, I am a libertarian.  Individual liberty is the most important cultural value to me, and preserving that liberty against threats from governments or corporatist entities or miseducated radicals who want to misuse the power of government to punish their perceived enemies.  If I lived in a nation that had achieved a national ethic of individual liberty for all, I would be a fanatical conservative - wanting to preserve that liberty at all costs.

But I live in the United States.  So what I want to conserve is the wisdom of the Founding Fathers, and that usually puts me at odds with both Democrats and Republicans.  :)

I am quite liberal, though I do have conservative views. But hear me out.

I am very against exclusiveness, and am accepting of every race, skin colour, gender, sexuality, religion etc.

But that being said, there is one thing that bothers me about religion. I understand that it is the person's belief, and I respect that.

However, a lot of the times, the person's belief is forced upon by their parents and/or society.

I do not like, for example, that muslim women are forced to wear a hijab or niqab. I understand that the reason for this is to show modesty, but it's such a backwards thinking when men can walk around in shorts and t-shirts. I don't like that there is such an unbalanced equality between men and women in the muslim culture. I can understand that a woman muslim might have CHOSEN to follow the traditions of the religion, but a lot of the times, their parents and/or society is the one pressuring them to conform.

I, myself, am from a strict Chinese Buddhist household, but my parents do not force me what to wear or not to wear. I choose to dress modestly. I don't wear low cut shirts, or any short shorts/skirts. I generally cover up, but to me, it doesn't matter if people choose to dress provocatively or not. My only problem is if muslim women are suppressed out of their will for fear of being outcast by their family/society.

I tend to have conservative suspicions, if that counts -- I'm slow to adopt new technologies and mistrustful of the next big shiny idea everyone and their younger sister seems mesmerized by. Other than that, no, socially and politically I'm fairly progressive. If I'm consciously something in politics, I'd say I'm a rationalist. Sadly, we seem to be a precious few.
