When's the Last Time the J-Music Scene Truly Excited/Wowed you?

Basically as the title asks when is the last time you were really excited for anything coming out of the J-Music industry? And what was the last thing to leave you impressed? A lot of people talk about the industry going downhill after 2010, but there's definitely good music out there and people on this forum are always finding something good? Do these new acts excite and interest you more or less than your old faves? Or do you simply find yourself losing interest the older you get?

This could be anything from albums, singles, PVs, concerts, announcements, etc.

ONE OK ROCK's 3xxxv5 concert. Definitely the best concert I've ever attended. Beyond amazing. I was initially slightly disaapointed by the 3xxxv5 album as it didn't have the same 'rock' feel their previous albums had, but seeing it live made me realise that it was just badly mixed/produced (not sure which cause I'm no music expert).

Bought the BluRay DVD of the same concert - 10/10.

2012 was the last time I was totally happy with the artists I followed, I think. I discover new people every year who make me feel some kind of hope for the industry but they get hit by the flop plague so quick I feel like I shouldn't even let myself get attached. :/

As of right now, I love what this girl is doing and her album has been my first and only J-music purchase of the year so far, but she's very, very indie so I worry she won't last long.

Man... It has indeed been years.

Last time I think was around Crystal Kay's "Call Me Miss' album in 2006 and Namie Amuro's 'Queen of Hip Pop' in 2005

I used to love Momosu, but the last thing I can remember liking was ROMANS 'Sexy Night ï½žå¿˜ã‚Œã‚‰ã‚Œãªã„å½¼' and some Berry Koubou ã‚ãªãŸãªã—ã§ã¯ç”Ÿãã¦ã‚†ã‘ãªã„.

All that was like 2003-2004, I think. And Aya Matsuura's 'the Last Night' comes to mind...

anyway, I stopped following after J R&B died and I stopped liking the sound of the Momosu/Tsunku. Oh and can't forget Hikaru Utada. I think that stopped after she dropped that Kingdom Hearts single. I loved her so much before that. And I was pumped for her UTADA english album, and was promptly disappointed after only liking two or three songs.

I didn't know they released more music, I'm so excited!!! Did the members change?

and to answer op, FAKY^ and Babymetal are of course my queens. They mega unique and exciting

I'm on Jrock board when band like laruku, uverworld, gazette, gackt, exile, etc at their peak. But dbsk and snsd divert my attention to kpop while i lose interest in jpop since idol booming (akb48 and family).

Now babymetal had lead me back to jpop scene and find another good act like band maid, scandal, sekai no owari, gesu, spyair, one ok rock.

For people who don't follow idols, it all went a bit downhill after 2010 just because most soloist acts disappeared or release less and less music. We had good years since then though. But the last time I truly enjoyed new J-Pop music was in 2014 (with notable releases by YUKI, Ai Otsuka, SALU, AKLO, Charisma.com, The Pier, HaKU, Bumps of Chicken, Akai Koen, KLOOZ, Yun*chi, MISIA, Sheena Ringo and many others!). It was really a great year where I basically listened to Japanese music only.

Unfortunately, It all went downhill quickly after that.

In 2015 I only liked few albums (negoto, tricot, G.Rina, Yumi Shizukusa, half of _genic and few others).

2016 has been quite disappointing so far to the point that it's an all time low for me since I started following Japanese music. There's nothing that I really liked or got me excited, with the exception of Miliyah's FUTURE LOVERS and Seiho's Collapse. Many acts that I follow had new releases but they all disappointed me.

Luckily western music has been good lately so I still managed to find the quote of new music that I need.

There have been many instances this year -> Suchmos' Love & Vice, Daichi's Cry & Fight, KAT-TUN's Tragedy, D.A.N.'s EP, Nakashima Ko's Raft and Taxis, The Fin's Through The Deep, HVNS's Chrome, Mori Daisuke's Music Diner, Arashi's Fukkatsu Love, Salu's Good Morning, and this week it was Tsuyoshi's Grateful Rebirth. I'm also looking forward to Boom Boom Satellite's upcoming EP.

To be honest, I think the fact that I don't like pop that much has made these latest years as a J-Pop fan totally awesome for me because there's been more acts, especially bands releasing the type of music I'm into and it's become a lot easier to get my hands on their stuff as well. Another thing is, I don't have any interest in stanning, watching pretty PVs or collecting nice covers and photo jackets so as long as the music is great that is enough to leave me thrilled. If I were attached to these acts or into the whole fandom and visual package experience as many people in this forum seem to be I imagine things would be a lot different though.

I think it's been exciting for me most of the time. The only down time I can think of is when K-pop started to rise and the fall of female J-pop soloists. I like some of AKB's songs (I'm more of a NMB fan) but there were more misses than hits for me. During this time I just started to download whatever each site had to offer and see if it stuck with me; while sticking to my old favorites. I guess that's what kept me in J-pop for a while.

Whats really exciting me now are bands and city-pop.

This is so true and I find this a lot when people go from indie to major.
