okay but seriously what is it with korea and ballads

It's kind of like how country music is popular in USA, even though it's not as appreciated in other countries. Some types of music are just preferred historically over others in different countries.

Country music in Korean form would be trot music. Ballads exist everywhere... its just weird because they all sound so much the same, I can't imagine going to my friend and being like "Listen to THIS!!" *plays them a tearful song about loving a married man*

Serious question, because i see that often.

Do people really think that ballad, all sound the same?

My guess is that we are now too much used to a variety of timbre and people find music that reuse the same timbre (classical music, folk, ballad) boring. Because besides the instrumentation these 3 songs are very different

I understand they don't sound the same, however they sound awfully similar and if I were to listen to those songs thirty minutes apart, I would probably not be able to tell the difference.

But trot isn't as popular as ballads have always been. A couple of trot songs are classics and trot was pretty big after the colonial period in Korea but it lost traction in the 80s.

I'm not saying the genres of ballad and country music are the same, I'm referring to how they have a huge following despite other countries not liking it as much.

And yes ballads exist everywhere, but honestly they differ from country to country as well. The ballads which Koreans generally love like those of Naul, PHS, etc are what some people refer to as "bland" because they have somewhat the same tempo throughout, and are generally carried completely by the singer than the music. The ballads which generally get popular in the west, are focused quite a lot on the music as well.
