Fentyoncé 2,548
SM Entertainment has issued an official announcement refusing any form of support (lunches or snacks sent during music show rehearsals, etc) or birthday gifts for their newest rookie unit, NCT U. The label stated, Hello, this is staff in charge of NCT. We thank all of the fans who cheer on NCT. We've made a final decision regarding all of your questions to support NCT, in that we will not accept any support or birthday gifts. If there are any forms of support that you have prepared, we will kindly refuse, thanking you for your kind gesture, so even though you may be disappointed, please understand and follow our request. The members of NCT will do their best to repay you by putting all of your love and adoration for NCT in their hearts, and promote diligently. Thank you again to all the fans who cheer on NCT. While some fans have expressed disappointment toward the news, saying, "They should've told us sooner" or "Now we have to return and refund all of the support and funds raised", others seem to be understanding of the label's decision. Fans noted that in SHINee's case, it was the group's decision to refuse forms of support or gifts, which ultimately led to the label issuing an official notice. Fans will find more creative ways to celebrate their birthdays; they always do! I actually really like this decision because I hate how entitled some fans get because they bought something for their "oppas". Like calm down, oppas do not belong to you because you bought them stuff and to get hissy at them for dating, not being able to use the gift and having to give it away, and/or shutting down your fansite because you think that you're so entitled to your idols because you bought them stuff just baffles me everytime. I get that fan support and gifts are special to many, but I'd rather NCT U not have these types of entitled fans and I'm sure fans will find other creative ways to support them and have other creative uses for their money however they so choose to spend it. janiedee 4,766
Even donations in their name?? I though that was a pretty awesome way to support your fave. I don't think the agency would have any say in that anyway, so probably not.
Fentyoncé 2,548
Even donations in their name?? I though that was a pretty awesome way to support your fave. I feel like donations in their name would be okay - it just can't be gifts directly to them I guess like the warehouse of gifts a lot of idols can get on their birthdays I've read a lot of Shinee fanclubs donating on behalf of the member's name too I believe. Like I know Shinee's Taemin has never accepted gifts but fans always send him letters instead and he takes those I believe.

janiedee 4,766
I was initially disappointed since it's a way for fans to be able to express their love, but after some thinking I agree that this may be for the best. A lot of fans go to the nines with the gifts, and if it were me I'd be thankful but I'd also feel burdened about people giving me expensive luxury items. Especially since many of these fans are just young schoolgirls with little to no income. I'd hope that they'd still accept things like letters or fanmade things though. HelloSone 1,623
I think it`s fine, sometimes fans can be really extreme and spent too much money buying even technology stuff that i`m sure the idols won`t even touch, same thing happens when they send 1000+ cakes, they should just send letters that contains all their feelings and gratitude towards their idols and if they want to collaborate with something good do donations. footballfina 29,566
*eyes emoji* this supports my lowkey theory that SM is still mostly treating them as trainees (or at least somewhere between trainee and fully debuted idol) because this kind of attitude was present at all their fansigns as well... Sun☼Shine 4,273
I think this is a good decision. Like you said OP, it will get rid of that I own oppa/he owes me mentality that's so prevalent in Kpop. Between this and JYPE's new rules, seems like companies are trying to change fan culture (and it's about time).

akio.kgmi 51
This is good decision. Most idols can't use all fans gifts and those fans want them to use it or bothering them with the requests. These idols use sponsored fashions whenever they are outside. Also, if idols give their stuffs to other members/family/gf or bf/friends/staffs all of fans will flip the table and make it a big deal and stop being a fan. It will just ruin the idol's image. taebb 1,624
Like I know Shinee's Taemin has never accepted gifts but fans always send him letters instead and he takes those I believe. it's not that taemin never accepted gifts - he did when he was younger, and his fansites used to get him really, really expensive stuff. eg. https://autisstatis.wordpress.com/2012/07/21/taemins-birthday-gifts-from-cosmicaa-fansite/ http://caffe-lattae.tumblr.com/post/27793732839/120718-taemins-birthday-gifts-from-718gram but in 2013 taemin asked fans to donate the money to organisations in need. nocturne013 2,034
Weird but I guess it's for the best. Now fans can save their money up for other things such as albums and it gets rid of the fan entitlement mentality that some have.
DeeZee 1,603
It makes sense, they should've never accepted them in the first place. Some fans take it too far. You shouldn't be spending thousands of dollars on an idol. That's just insanity. Even with cheap gifts, with so many fans it's easy for that stuff to become clutter. PockyAddict1989 3,100
This is a decent idea! This will qwell down on the "I own bias" stans that buy idols expensive gifs just to get close to thier faves. Happy that many kpop companies (did'nt jype and a few others stop accepting gifs too if i can recall correctly)

u.r.me! 283
I think it's Great decision as you said It will get ride of that they own their oppas or owe them sth and they can save money to support group albums and buy ticket for their concerts/ showcase and I prefer they donate the money to charity organization on their behalf since they need money more than Idol cus idol can offer these thing or doesn't use them ( like I saw Fansites goes extreme with their gifts and some idols doesn't use them bcs they already have it )
