(Serious) How can YG promote his artists better?

Rather than a fuck YG conversation. Let's have a real genuine discussion on how YG can publicly promote his artists better. No trolling, 100% honest opinions while staying respectful.

Disclaimer: I am a YG stan.

YG has poor public relations skills that negatively affects the fans of many of his groups and lead to problems later on. While some of the decisions actually have sound backing such as why they don't go on certain music shows, others do not.

Personally, I think the best promotion isn't shoving an artist in people's faces on television screens etc. I think the best way to actually is through the fans. Fans have a lot more power than anyone else. These are the people who will promote the artists to their fans. Bring friends to concerts etc. So if I was him, I would hire a team of the top fansite admin to YG who take the time and be in charge of marketing/public relations for the group.

Just my first idea. What ideas do you all have?

He should make a sns account for the group, just like BTS. I remember they have twitter account predebut where they post pics and videos of themselves doing something. Look where is BTS now

He should do normal promotional stuff for rookies, like what other companies do.

Well, he can start by quitting the company altogether.

this.

YGTV was great back in the day.

actively interact with the fans via SNS and/or via Youtube.

and also let his artists comeback at least once a year and maybe a follow up single after wards.

and how about going on major variety shows DURING promotions. not just afterwards?

Make a variety show, like other idols do. The show should contain events that will bring a new side of them and attract fans, or maybe silly games that would make the audience crack up or whatever. I think that's the most effective way...

He could actually discipline his idols when needed, so that they learn it's not okay to do drugs, do black face, say "nigga", get your dick sucked when you're supposed to be serving in the army etc.

If he did that, they'd be a lot more public friendly.

The best way to promote is to go on shows, basically being on TV. I have so much to say about this because I saw the rise of so many bg and gg and I know for a fact the majority of them rose the same way. They went on TV and promoted like crazy, got exposure while guesting on a particular show or several shows and blew up.

First - Release music frequently. This is the first step to gain fans. Fans need music, new material- You wont gain hardcore fangirls if your artists are constantly in the dungeon.

Second - Promote on music shows. Remember Gfriend with Rough. They promoted the first week everywhere on music shows and the big rise started the second week. Promotions on music shows helps. I know YG artists dont go on all of them and its not such a big deal tbh, Sketchbook is good too. The point is to promote the song and let it be heard by the masses.

Thrid - Dramas/Variety shows/Singing shows. Where you can gain the highest public recognition ever. Look at Mamamoo in Immortal song, their fame started there. There is Mask Singer where so many idols like Solji got popular, there is also Duet festival...idols who go on this shows slowly build their relevancy. I cant believe YG has so many gems like Seungyoon, Minzy (before her departure) but they never guested on those shows. Variety should be taken into account too. YG has so many idols with talent who have different strength in different areas, why not take advantage of that and push them more in those fields? Pretty sure some of them can act, why not push them...? I still remember Yoon and Tae web dramas...those are only watched by fans. Its time to step up his game and get them gigs on public channels, what the majority of koreans actually watch.

So much could be done, so much talent...but all I see is wasted potential.

He should not let his pride rule over him. Promote YG artists in variety shows so they gain public recognition.

When they were still not big, BB was still starting, they are active in variety shows and music shows.

I believe Yang Hyun Suk treat every artists as if they are like BB which can take hiatus for a long time and comeback stronger than ever. But that's not the case, most of his acts now are rookies. Give them comebacks now and then. YG artists are capable to their own production, Winner, Akmu, Lee Hi or even Ikon can write songs on their own.

Let's begin by looking at the big 3's weakness, ending with YG.

SM: Overworks the hell out of their artists, clearly no care for their well being, for the most part. Seems to be changing... somewhat.

JYP: Great initial promotions but always fall through after a year or two. Let's hope Twice's popularity keeps them from screwing anything up for a while.

YG: If you have been in K-Pop long enough, you know that YG hates the idea of selling their artists as idols like other companies. For them, music comes first, CF deals and stuff relating to that is the extent of it. They're basically trying to copy the American formula to the T.

But that's not how Korea works. Korea wants to see their idols in everything, and YG doesn't properly comply with that. This leaves long droughts of inactivity in a country where any kind of activity is essential. One of the reasons BigBang got so big is because they were everywhere. They don't need to that anymore but it would be nice if they were more active in Korea. Their new artists need that exposure, otherwise they will linger behind other rising groups.

In a sense they have a very hipster attitude about promoting but they need to realize that they are idols in the business of making money. Leave the seriousness to Lee Hi and Epik High who are clearly not idols.

Yall whinners  :donthinkso:

Tbh YG already have a system that works. A system that guarantees money.

Why would he make Winners work so hard without sleep like BTS? BTS is even sick constantly now.

I agree and disagree with variety. I do think they need to be exposed more but I also see a huge danger in them saying the wrong thing on variety then have netizens flip out or take it out of context. I think YG should utilize the three clubs he owns and have his groups do mini concerts doing the week. Something small and with intimate sets. Then set up a weekly panel at one of his restaurants where you get to be fully candid with an artist/group to get to know them and get to know how far along THEY are in the process and then hear unreleased songs. That way they can release music and not get harassed or put in the dungeon if public reception isn't good. I think it would be better for YG to just create his own variety show. Somewhat in the vein of YGTV but more unique where it changes from artist and group weekly.

This also allows the artists engagements to be consistent but also not taxing and overwhelming like other companies but will get public reception as well.

Yang Hyun Suk needs to stop using the public response to his interviews as an indicator of what he should do. Announcing a 2ne1 comeback for the summer but then again no cause the public response wasn't good enough?!?
Announcing iKON for january 2015 but then again no because... we don't know...
All that media play is hurting the fans and creating bad blood between fandoms, "YGNGG stealing BB/2ne1's comeback schedule" which I've seen going around a lot. Instead of creating support from other fandoms within the company he creates rivalry :S

Also that exclusivity BS needs to stop. There is a reason why Gfriend or Twice are getting so popular: they're promoting everywhere on variety and/or more than 1 song a year. When YG puts groups/artists back in dungeon for over a year with ZERO promotion, of course they lose fans and momentum.
Lee Hi was one of the most promising female solo when she debuted, and all that hype went down the drain with her long, useless hiatus.
AKMU was a digital monster when they debuted, with their comeback, the chart should have looked like when IU comes back (a.k.a. top 8-9 songs are all the songs from their album) but nope, nothing. RE-Bye at 9th while Eunji and Twice (who came back before AKMU) are still in top 5...
Both Lee Hi and AKMU did well, much better than artists of other companies, but by far not as well as anyone expected.

YG just needs to rethink his idea of "artist not idol" when he wants the popularity of idols with the respectability of artists. Big Bang didn't get to where they are without promoting. Neither did IU. You have to reach a certain level before you can get picky and exclusive, and that level is not achieved by the company or the sunbaes, being big 3 doesn't make you the top. Topping the charts and the polls does, and to do that, GP needs to be aware of who you are, and this works with variety, CFs and many many stage performances like university concerts. Reaching out to new audiences and not just the ones who are already fans.

I can rant a lot about YG, because I actually love so many YG artists, it gets me worked up to see how poorly they are managed even though they're 'big 3'

Variety can be a double edged sword, you are right. Even if they don't say or do anything some shows have a negative edit. Maybe something like YGTV would be a good compromise.
