Does anyone know what's happening in France?

It's a state of disorder in some places, people are rioting unjust laws that will allow employers to break down unions.

Workers at all eight oil refineries in France are on strike, a high school student is being charged with attempted murder after allegedly striking a pig with an iron bar, and workers at two nuclear reactors plan to go on strike.

I went to the bank at Place d´Italie and it was a mess. Strike everywhere, I couldnt even breathe since they were bombing everywhere (the ones with the white smoke). I dont know whats happening but unions are really mad.

greve ? ou manif ?

unions = syndicat ?

I mean the 1st minister literally forced the vote of the labour laws knowing that people weren't diggin it.

It's now a fight between workers and the french state to see who's going to give up 1st.

I totally understand the reasons of those strike but by doing so they're blocking the country economically.

You have to disrupt the state to get what you want

C´était violent ici aussi, des bombes partout. Normalement, leur grève se termine demain mais je ne sais pas s´ils vont continuer la semaine prochaine...

you didn't choose the right time to ask haha it's 4 am here

it's been messy for a few weeks now (well it actually started a couple of months ago)  because they're trying to pass a law related to work conditions that a lot of people consider unfair on many points (especially the power that would be given to employers)

i haven't been keeping up with all the latest news of what's been happening in the demonstrations and all that so i won't pretend i know all about them :/ :/ but basically there have been a lot of demonstrations during mobilisation days in big cities which have unfortunately sometimes escalated into violence between protesters and the police, people in different sectors have been going on strike (and it's even reached some nuclear sites on thursday), some oil depot sites have been blocked  -- and it's still going on

and then there's also the fact the government used an article of the constitution that allows them to quicken the process of passing the law by bypassing the vote of the deputies (the majority of which were against it iirc) which made it worse

Just to add, this bill they are protesting already exists in the United States. It's called "At-will employment." It is cruel as hell to the employees.

BBC Article Summary : The reforms will make it easier for employers to hire and fire workers.

French labour reform bill - main points
  • The 35-hour week remains in place, but as an average. Firms can negotiate with local trade unions on more or fewer hours from week to week, up to a maximum of 46 hours
  • Firms are given greater freedom to reduce pay
  • The law eases conditions for laying off workers, strongly regulated in France. It is hoped companies will take on more people if they know they can shed jobs in case of a downturn
  • Employers given more leeway to negotiate holidays and special leave, such as maternity or for getting married. These are currently also heavily regulated

I heard the economy suffers heavily from these strikes and disruptions, not just merely transportations

for foreigners: it's not even as bad as it seems (journalists always tend to exaggerate a bit) and people already explained before me even though some of them clearly exagerrated (theres no bombing, this isn't WW2... i think and hope it was a mistranslation), i don't think the current law the governement is passing is the right one but we clearly need to change some things if we want to "survive" economically, unfortunately workers are clutching to their overly advantageous labour laws like the 35 hour workweek (which was one of the biggest mistakes of the last decade)...

and then you have some idiots who think that destroying stores and cars and such during their protests is gonna help, those people are usually young males who tend to have questionnable views... i'll leave it at that
