Jessica Jung, known as just Jessica, is an american singer and businesswoman who is based in South Korea and a former member of southkorean girl group Girls’ Generation. Jessica joined SM Entertainment at the age of 11 and trained 7 years until she debuted as one of the two main vocalist of Girls’ Generation. Ever since her career as a vocalist has been recognized by many fans and Jessica has released a number of solo songs for OSTs as well as two singles with her ex group mates Tiffany and Seohyun. Later in 2014 it was announced that Jessica would no longer be a part of Girls’ Generation and that her and her former agency, SM Entertainment, parted ways. In february of 2016, Jessica announced that her first solo album, “With Love, J†would be released under her new agency, Coridel Entertainment.

ANALYSIS_zpsfhabeyyb.png

VOCAL RANGE: D3 – G5 – D6 (3 octaves)

Supported range: G3 – B4 (1 octave and 2 notes) to F5 with falsetto.

Since the days of her debut as a main vocalist of Girls’ Generation, Jessica distinguished herself from the rest of the vocal line because of her peculiar high pitched and thin voice color. As a solo act, Jessica has the tendency of staying into a relatively safe zone for her vocal abilities and perform songs that are not too high for her, even lowering a song’s tessitura if needed to make it easier and safer for her to perform it, as in “Gravity†and “Somedayâ€. In Girls’ Generation songs, however, she used to sing more challenging parts than the average of the vocal line, going outside of her comfort zone a number of times as shown in songs like “Into the New World†and “DIVINEâ€.

As for agility, Jessica is not a singer who takes a lot of risks when it comes to vocal riffs and vocal runs. When she does, however, sing songs that demand her to change notes rapidly, pitch accuracy becomes a problem and the singer might go flat during the performance even in studio recordings, as shown in “Love Me The Same†and “Somedayâ€, which has always been an issue for Jessica. Transitions in between register have been always decently executed, as long as the vocalist is not out of her comfort zone.

Vocal positives: Support in her voice is consistent within the G3 – Bb4/B4 range and can project forward when in good condition. Transitions in between falsetto and other registers are achieved effortlessly. Her chest voice has a decent projection and a good support as down as G3 and ocassionally F#3. Falsetto is well projected and relaxed in all its known extension up to F#5. Although inconsistently, Jessica has been able to produce resonant notes within and above her consistent supported range as high as D5, with more consistency in the A4 – Bb4 range. She is able to reduce and, at times, get rid of nasality by lifting her soft palate.

Vocal negatives: Nasality is present in almost all her singing which causes a lack of projection and the sound becomes small in comparision to other vocalists. Above B4, her support is inconsistent and her throat might close that, along with nasality issues, reduces the projection of her vocals. In live settings Jessica has a tendency of going out of pitch when in bad (or lazy) condition. The usage and development of a true head voice has not been executed as the vocalist prefers to transition into falsetto, which might be due to an inability of connecting the vocal chords properly. Improvement in her technique overall has been almost absent since her debut days.

REGISTERS_zpsiljgltbw.png

  • LOWER REGISTER

Jessica’s lower register is arguably among the best lower register of sopranos in k-pop. She is able to carry a strong support to G3 and G#3 more consistently with a very good projection until G#3, as shown in “FLY†and “Gravityâ€. Below G#3, her support starts to lose consistency as her F3s in “Big Mini World†and her projection might become less forward as shown in her G3 in “I Love Rock’n’Rollâ€. Although improvement in support is not present in this register, her consistency in projection has progressed in her last album, as her tone is present as down as F3.

  • MIXED REGISTER

The vocalist’s mixed register presents issues in projection and consistency. Although Jessica has been able to produce supported and resonant, notes above Bb4, as her B4s in “The Boysâ€, C5s in “Dear Mom†and “Mr. Mr.â€, her C5/C#5 in “Goodbyeâ€, C#5s in “The Boys†and “One Year Later†and numerous of her D5s of “California Gurlsâ€, her consistency above Bb4 is questionable since nasality can block any true resonance if the singer does not lift the soft palate as soon as B4, as shown in “Gravity†and “DIVINE†and support might not be present above B4 as her C5 and D5 in “Big Mini World†and her C#5 in “Golden Skyâ€, where her voice sounds tight and strained. Above that point, Jessica loses any consistency as her notes sound pushed and closed with a high larynx and a poor projection, as shown in the E5 of “Girls’ Generation†and “Kissing You†and the F5/F#5 of “Into the New Worldâ€. However, Jessica rarely goes above her supported range. Within her consistent supported range, resonance might happen when lifting the soft palate mostly below B4, as shown in her Bb4 of “Love Me The Same†and her B4 of “Falling Crazy in Loveâ€.

  • HIGHER REGISTER

The least used of Jessica’s registers, her falsetto is connected until F5 and it is what she mostly uses when dabbling into the fifth octave. Although probably unable to produce a head resonance and connect her vocal chords properly and thus creating a falsetto, Jessica projects her voice properly and make a soft and natural sound as she ascends until F5 as shown in “Love Me The Sameâ€. Above that point her consistency is, once again, questionable.

CONCLUSION_zpsip7j2abq.png

Jessica still presents the same issues as when she started her singing career back in 2007, which are inconsistency with nasality and support, but her actual skills are more than enough for the type of music she is singing. However, if she wants to be taken more seriously as one of the top vocalists of South Korea, improving her consistency and removing nasality should be the first step.

Recommended performance(s): “Love Me The Sameâ€, “Goodbyeâ€, “One Year Laterâ€

Hyorin is a better Vocalist than Jessica, I love them both but Jessica isn't on Hyorin's level...

It's not like you know stuff bout technique??? & just cuz theyre placed under the same category doesn't mean they're on the same level. There's differences between the level of vocal talent between every idol placed under a category.

Very interesting! Thank you!

The one thing i would love to yell at Jessica is how she stopped caring about her vocal technique. She has so much potential but with hard work, it would never be reached.

I kinda lost hope now.

I'll quote this since it's pretty much what I would answer besides maybe for the first part:

as she said, Hyorin even got a much higher score than Jessica, and Hyorin regressed.

Taeyeon lower than Jonghyun ? :wth:

Yes lol by a bit

Here i am, reading this and not understanding almost anything except she is good and bad. I still like these threads because they give me a different perspective.

Are you going to do BEG's vocals?

Yes I will eventually!

Unfortunately she has not improved as much as Taeyeon, Tiffany or Seohyun

but let's see what happens lol

They're both Competent Vocalists according to Kpopvocalanalysis so idk what's going on

Taeyeon has a 78 score I think while Jonghyun has an 82, so he qualified for a higher "tier" in the vocal chart although they are not very far from each other in the score

Nice as always! With her issues in nasality and pitch, I was surprised she made it on the Î³+ level. I'd say she's sitting at the bottom edge of Î³+, and it's just as easy to say she's a high Î³.

(She's got a nice chest voice so I get why you'd put her there though, looking forward to your next post!)

Hyorin on her worse day is still better than Jessica on a normal day...but that's just my opinion. I'll take my leave and not give your ignorant self the satisfaction of arguing with me.

Yes I knew she was going to make it to the γ+ level when Tiffany made it to the high edge of γ

She has a nice chest voice and other than that I would say she is average at least, Tiffany has a chest voice and the rest are average at best lol so there's a considerable gap in there

I agree

but Hyorin strains worse than Jessica because she goes above C5 more often

Yes I will do EXO as well, most likely Kyungsoo, Chen and Baekhyun

they're both competent but that doesn't mean they're on the same level. Jonghyun got 83 and Taeyeon got 78, they could have ended in the same category. It depends on the chart.
