At its peak which was bigger in Asia: Meteor Garden or Korean dramas?

Because someone made a Barbie Hsu news thread @ the C-entertainment section I'm reminded of how big Meteor Garden was when I was still living in Asia a decade or so ago.

I still feel their impact was bigger than any Kdramas because the remnants of that phenomenon can still be felt in 2016 (16 years later and the Taiwanese F4 boys are still considered hotties when they are at the age some actors begin playing father roles to grown up actors)

Save for Dae Jang Geum/Jewel in the Palace or maybe Full House no Kdrama can match the MG wave. What makes it bigger for me than DJG or Full House is the fact that no matter where: Jakarta, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, Japan...everyone and their mothers and their grandmothers knew who Jerry, Zaizai, Vanness, Ken and Barbie (or more known as Da S. yup, she's Xiao S's big sis) while Kdramas mainly anchor their fame to the latest trending K-actor which changes every year or so

The MG wave also happened pre-Youtube/Dramafever so it's pretty amazing what an impact it made.

Never forget these timeless OSTs from Meteor Garden

To anyone else living in Asia back when MG and Hallyu peaked what's your recollection of both phenomenons?

As someone who lives in SEA, I'd say Meteor Garden. I remember their posters being sold everywhere and their songs being played repeatedly on the radio and Taiwanese F4 always topped local charts here back then. It was such a huge, phenomenal craze.

I thought My Fair Princess was the most popular?

hzgg was mainly popular among the chinese speaking community/countries but i feel meteor garden was able to conquer even the countries and communities beyond that

for instance mg even gathered an audience who never watched other asian dramas before besides the ones shown domestically in their countries so i feel that was the difference

For Indonesia, I'll say it's Meteor Garden. People from ALL generations knew F4. The drama was repeated on tv till I remember the finest detail of their shoes. Everything had their pictures on it. Their fanmeeting was broadcastwd repeatedly. It was insane.

oh really? that's cool! hzgg was a huge part of my childhood too but most people I meet from Asia recall MG more than HZGG (just my own experience)

a good thing tho is that people like vicki and ruby (and FBB! haha) were able to really expand their careersfrom there but while having other successful dramas...the f4 guys are still really connected to their mg fame even to this day lol

I guess Vietnam is just a bit different. Like I don't know if there's any show like Oshin where the title becomes a common word that everyone uses.

Meteor garden and some Chinese classics have a bigger impact tbh...for SEA especially. I agree, Dae Jang Geum is the only kdrama I can think of that matches its impact. Oh, and old hk movies have more impact than any korean movie too.

But what's amazing is the lengthy popularity the F4 guys had

The fact they still are to this day never ceases to amaze me

I'm honestly shocked that even in 2016 some are still stubborn regarding the truth and reality that took place. You can turn revisionist in close up movements but not when it's done deal and not close in measurements..

Korean Boys over Flowers by far the biggest revolution ever coming out of Asia.

Lee Min Ho single handedly has 60-Milion fandom worldwide and it's visible not something based on assumptions and actully changed everything. It's was not a cult following but widespread phenomonen.

Let it go and concede the truth
