Writers, do you ever read your old stuff and cringe

Like it can be fanfic or maybe old attempts at a novel... or an actual work you've published. Or old essays. Or blogs. I've left a trail of mediocre fanfic on the internet I will probably never acknowledge as mine  :derp:

At least like one or two of them probably has/have been obliterated forever when the forum it was posted on shut down. Good. Then again it's probably in some internet graveyard somewhere. Another one was posted in another forum and I don't care to look for it again. I still get kudos on AO3 for this one fic I've written and I honestly don't understand because... it's not good... but I appreciate getting them lol

What about you guys? Any embarrassing stories? Anything you wish you'd written differently?

Do you sometimes feel like going back in the past and stopping your younger self from writing something?

Share with the class

Oh, of course.  That's how you know you have grown as a writer.  If you keep growing it will keep happening - but you should level off to mild embarrassment after a few years. :)

I thought I remember reading someone on OH saying they're a writer. Was it you? Unless I made that one up.

It's been more a few years since I first started writing and yeah I mostly laugh them off and facepalm.

I'm not really a writer but I do enjoy it and used to when I was younger. And yep, all of my stories need to go to hell. I feel sorry for all the high-school English teachers that have to read through tons of emo stories lol. I wouldn't say they were terrible but just super angsty and depressing. And usually 3x longer than required because I'm extra that way. My last story got praise from my teacher after class so I guess they were ~moving~ but looking back, also cringe-inducing. I wouldn't go back and change it though - they were critical steps in becoming a better writer and working through stuff. I think they were creative. With that being said, I'd never in a million years let anyone I know read them. Ever. :-)

my old essays are actually pretty great

my old fiction and poems and such...yikes @ some of those

i'm learning to write like myself rather than someone else who i think is good. i think looking at my old stuff is good for seeing my progress and remembering who i was when i wrote that

my old stuff when i was like 14 was actually fun.. my imagination was good then, could come up with events after events. i even drew some chibi manga, was never meant to be serious. my friends read it.

the things i wrote in the years after were all forced and cringey though, but at least they're all anonymous on the net.
