Hey guys!!!! So I've been jamming to a few of my kpop playlists this evening. They're organized in many different ways and I've decided to share and discuss with those who care, about the wonders of some of the many songwriters (and producers) without whom most of the kpop songs we all love would just not exist.

If I find that people like to discuss about it, I'll post other specific threads so we can discuss about any one particular songwriter or team of songwriters (or producers) because I know not everybody pay attention to them or just can't find out about them.   :imstupid:  :imstupid:

 

(Personally, if I love a song, I'd do everything I can to find who wrote/produced it to find other songs they've worked on...)

 

So, for this first one, I'll talk about:

She's a young lyricist (86) who's mainly worked with SM until she took some freedom recently and started working outside of the company. Here is a list of my personal favorites from her:

Anybody else like her work?? (I'm sure YESSS!!!)  :hurr:

 

I think she has a flair for fun and playful melodies, as she understands just how to make her melodies "marry" the instrumental. For example, "Electric Shock"'s verses are directly inspired by the melody of the synths; she adds variations and fun interjections such as "yeahhh", "a-ha!", "oww!!" . (I don't pay much attention to the actual meaning though). So it's very catchy and effortless to say the least.

 

What she does is incredibly difficult though since she mainly writes over uptempo beats (not an easy work). Most US uptempo songs, for instance, will use extensive repetition and uninspired (few notes) melodies. In my opinion, she is definitely one of SK's best pop songwriters at the moment. I'm always excited to see what she works on next.

Her songs are no joke, she -literally- wrote some of my favorite songs. Twinkle, Black Pearl, Don't Go, Toy (that F*CKING BRIDGE!!), Moonlight, What If..., El Dorado, Dumb Dumb, Closer....

I knew it. Thr person who wrote moonlight had to write what if.

 

Both are my favorite slow jams.

 

And she is drop dead gorgeous.

whoa op thank you for this thread!i am happy to know more about seo ji eum.i am the type who read the composer and lyricist name on the video of the artists' music pro perf.and when i read seo ji eum name before clicking on the thread,i instantly remember,'oh,this is Exo's growl maker' and then..seo ji eum is female..a talented,young and pretty on top of that :)

and i also pay attention to another composer,like sm it self has yyj,kenzie,shin hyuk or another hitmaker like dublesidekick who make sistar's give it to me and gsd's something.and i adore the team who make 9muses' dolls and kara's song,i forgot the team's name but they are great as well..!

Anyway, glad to know people responded and seem to just find out about all of those songs she wrote. I think I'm following her on Instagram, but it's all in korean (as well as her Twitter account) so not easy to be updated on her work.

tbvh most of SM titletracks have stupid lyrics. But kudos to her finding iconic lines/phrases which is also a very important part in producing a hit song

Lolool!! You know what, personally I am very glad that I don't readily understand what those Korean lyrics from SM translate to.  :smile:

From where I stand, their songwriters are geniuses when it comes to melodies and catchy tunes. I do know it can get very cheesy but when the song is a bop..you just can't help it..  :hurr:
