C-Drama Casting - Male Lead offered $23 Million US Dollars to star in 'Empresses in the Palace' sequel

Holy drama moly, even if half this news is correct it’s still the biggest drama news in Greater China in years. Filming starts this August on the conceptual sequel to China’s biggest hit C-drama ever The Legend of Zhen Huan with a career making turn by Sun Li as titular concubine turned empress. The upcoming Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace is already the most buzzed about production thanks to the casting of A-list movie star Zhou Xun as the female lead, at an apparently astronomical salary.

With Zhou Xun the only confirmed star and this being from the same production of Zhen Huan, the drama has already been pre-sold at a price higher than any C-drama in history. Now the excitement has been dialed up even further a notch with industry buzz that HK acting legend Tony Leung is making his first return to television in 27 years as the male lead in Ruyi opposite Zhou Xun, with a never before head price tag of $23 million US dollars (750 million NT) salary. If he’s in expect Ruyi to out star-stud Zhen Huan with so many supporting actors and actresses clamoring for a role, it’s going to be such a treat.

Use it on roads, and social warfare CHINA!!!! 23 million dollars to a guy for a play?, shame.....

First bold, that is government responsibility NOT entertainment industry for the job  :imstupid: So even without that money, it is not going to roads and social warfare. Pretty sure their government has money for that if they wanted to.

Second, the guy is Tony Leung and he is one of the biggest legend movie star ever (he is up there in legend status with Bruce Lee in Chinese film industry, and much much more respect in the industry with high acting creditable acclaim compare to Jackie Chan). All his movies are block buster, he is the male lead in Lust, Caution and The grandmaster.

I believe he has not appear in drama for the past 20years+; thats why, the fee will be on top to cast him in C-drama production imo. Plus, he is "supposedly" second highest paid movie star in the whole C-industry after Stephen Show (Stephen is more a producer than actor now though...).  If not, there is no chance to get him to appear in a drama LOL    :imstupid:

You know how much buzz and anticipation and copyright fee for this production with his name? I guess u don't

It was pretty massive, I don't think it's an exaggeration to put it up there with BBJX and NiF in terms of impact. Quotes from the drama became a big trend. It did really well in Japan and also got picked up by HBO/Netflix. Although I heard that didn't go over so well because they cut it down so much that it didn't make much sense anymore.

Personal opinion, ZHZ is my favorite historical drama because of the characters and their development, even "evil" characters were written in a way that you were able to sympathize with them to a degree. The dialogue was awesome too, I love that the characters say one thing on the surface but have a different meaning underneath. Plus who doesn't love some kickass female characters.

May I ask what BBJX and NIF is? sorry I don't watch Chinese drama like that.

I might check it out again with english sub and HQ.. or something because I was watching it with that overlap vietnamese dub. So there time I can't understand much.

Ahh, sorry about that. Bu Bu Jing Xin (or Scarlet Heart) and Nirvana in Fire. If you're interested you can give them a try because they're also amazing

Def give it another go! When I watched Legend of Zhen Huan last year, the eng subs were still a bit sub par in the latter half. I'm not too sure why it was the case, but hopefully someone's helped to improve them by now.

23 million is not a lot of money in those contexts. It'll probably get you 2 or 3 km worth of road and may be a couple floors of affordable housing. And China is building plenty of roads, probably too much.. (just surpassed the USA a few years ago, cost 240 Billion USD) and nearly a trillion USD in social spending (~15% of GDP)... So much so, there is debt problem now. 23 million pretty much nothing.

Holy shit, Tony Leung is one of my all time favourite actors and Legend of Zhen Huan was an amazing drama... Zhou Xun is an incredible actress to... $23million though... But that makes sense if the sequel plans to head to the US market like LZH did too... I am so hyped regardless.  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:
