Singers singing live despite struggling with tough choreo

Those who ran out of air but still tried to sing despite being

Would you rather they lip synced instead of singing while exhausted? Do you have examples of idols doing well/poorly?

I rather have them sing live and try doing the choreo. I just appreciate it more, as a fan, that they're willing to put their all into a performance on both ends instead of choosing one over the other for the sake of image. But its understandable if every once in a while a performer lipsyncs, sometimes that may be the best option depending on the situation

I think these two performances prove it is possible to sing really well live with really tough choreography

If the choreography is too hard for a particular group to do while singing, they should change it up. There are no excuses for anyone consistantly lipsynching.

Michael Jackson sings live despite singing and dancing for over 2 hours in concert. Beyonce sings live for the same period. 'Nsync and BSB sang and still sing live for their concerts. Justin Timberlake sings and dances live for all of his tours and award shows and any shows tbh. Utada Hikaru dances and sings live in all of her performances. I can name lots more.

It's especially important for me, personally, if I pay for the concert. I pay, you sing and dance, it's a fair trade. For award shows, I do respect the artist more if she/he/they do it live, since it's a freaking award show. It's supposed to be more prestigious than other things and this is where you show your mettle. And this is also where you get potential new fans. I like a lot of artists that I saw from award shows back then when I was an avid award show watcher.

Singing live doesn't mean you have to sing all parts, even MJ has parts that his back-up singers sang when he performed aka danced/moved around the stage. So does Justin Timberlake. That said, the whole performance must be at least 80% sang by the artist for it to be a legit live performance.

That said, it's me personally. Others don't care if they can see their favourites as close as possible, so it's not my issue. If people are willing to shell USD100-500 for a concert where the artist just dance oh-so-wonderfully but lip-sync, well, it's their money.

P/S: I remember T-ara was bashed so awfully by Malaysian local news as they lipsynced in World Stage concert. I remember Jay Park was also performing. Justin Beiber too, if I'm not mistaken. Jay was praised to high heavens since he sang and danced so well, live. The media don't care if you are tired, that kpop idols actually lipsync a lot etc, to them, it's a concert, people pay for it, they cover it, they just give their honest opinion. I felt so bad for T-ara after reading that 2-page spread.

I think idols deserve as much flack for continuously lipsynching as they should get praise for going live. That P!NK performance is a great example of everything gone right, she's so talented. It doesn't have to be perfect, but if this is beyond anyone's capabilities, either tone down the choreography or this job isn't for them.

hehe i wonder who this thread is regards to recently....

But like I've said in previous threads, I dont mind lip syncing if its for like a mundane stage live one of the many weekly shows. But for a big event that isn't watched by a particular fan group alone, like an award show, its a big no no.

i agree with this sfm, I think (obviously there are exceptions) that if an artist is performing and they can't sing live because the choreo is too hard what they need to do is change the choreo or get better at doing both. Two examples I remember are BoA and Crystal Kay. Crystal Kay  started out with less than stellar stage stamina but she was embarrassed about how her stages turned out so she worked to the point of being able to do rigorous choreography while singing live (it's no shame to rely on back singers or prerecordings now and again). I remember when BoA was preparing for her US debut she would not allow the choreographer to substitute easier dance moves so that it'd be easier to sing. She was going to do the ridiculously hard dance and sing live. BoA in particular is legendary because of that work that she put into her live stages. No artist is going to regret gaining the strength and stamina to sing and dance live, at the same time.

edit: weekly performances like music bank it's not a big priority to not lipsync, but if a group gets the opportunity to perform at one of the big shows or have their own concert then they should consider it

Honestly if you have worked hard on a difficult choreography and you want to show it off but you don't think you can manage to sing well whilst doing it, then take the mikes off and do the dancing. Then when you do decide to sing, choose a choreography that is suitable for singing live. The fact that they don't sing everytime doesn't bother me but the whole fakeness and pretending of lipsyncing does.

I'm not complaining, but I feel like a lot of people leave Teen Top out of these conversations. They sing live and have some pretty tiring/technical choreography.

It was a post in the thread by TMI where someone mentioned the word breathless and it made me think of the song so I made the thread :)

I agree with this

i still dont understand why idol groups lypsnch, like you all sing one line each and the chorus is normally playback! is singing one line live really that hard? if solo artist can do it, then so can a group! i dont care if theyre dancing, THEY SHARE THE LINES OUT, which means they have times to catch their breath!
