How good do you think are PENTAGON's main vocalists?

JO JINHO

- Was part of SM the Ballad a couple years ago.

- Trained for 8 years.

HUI (Lee Hwitaek)

- Won 1st in Vocals Category in a JYP Audition and was also scouted by 3 different agencies after.

- Trained for 6 years

How good do you think are they? (I have zero knowledge when it comes to vocals lol)

They've been training for so long and they are on the older side when it comes to debut age. Jinho - 1992, Hui - 1993. Pretty sure they are guaranteed to have spots in the group. Let's hope Cube doesn't mess this up.

/before anyone asks... pretty sure Hongseok is a lead vocal along with Yeo One/Changgu and Kino

NOTE: Please refrain from bashing. I'm just trying to promote PENTAGON coz Cube isn't exactly doing a good job with it.  :imstupid:

Their voices are good but generic. Like I've heard their voices before.

I feel like a lot of that has to do with the production, tbh. Certain forms of effects can rob voices of individuality. For example, compression can rob a voice of certain characteristic phrasing. Jino for a more specific example tended to have dips in volume followed by pretty strong "stabs" for lack of a better term, not unlike classic Mariah going from a whisper to a mid belt, just not nearly as extreme. That's very easy to hear on songs like Hot Times with SM the ballad but a lot less audible on Pentagon Maker, in my opinion. So for someone like him whose singing primarily gets its character from dynamic quirks more so than uniqueness of tone, he probably would come across as more generic to you here.

As to the original question, I think Jino and Hui are some of the best rookie vocals out there, honestly. It's important to note that I fully believe the performances were lip synced and that's okay. I don't doubt for a second that they could pull off much of what they did live. I also feel that people like Hongseok and Yeo One would easily be made main vocals at other companies. They're that good in my opinion.

Thank you for this detailed answer. I did want to ask how good they would be in comparison to their peers (other rookie boy groups from the past year since I haven't checked much of newer groups) but I thought comparison threads have potential to end up being messy so restrained myself.  :)

Yeah I think it is lipsynced too and I tweeted sth like, Jino is the best at it out of everyone prob coz of his SM training LOL

I couldn't help it. My job makes me a vocal/sound nerd haha. But thank you.

I do think Hui is being underrated though. If I had to guess I would think his natural voice type is a fair bit lower than Jino's but he was able to go for similar notes (higher in spots, if I'm not mistaken).

Yeah I think he might be. I'm not good with judging voice lol Here are short pre-debut clips of his that I liked. It's from 2011 iirc.

I love their voice and their colors. OML i'm still obsessed over See You Again perf... I'm already anticipating (hoping) for stage of vocal line of the main/lead vocals (jinho/hui/kino/changgu/hongseok) either on the show or when they debut...that'd be wonderful performance. tbh though on Hui, I do find the adlibs part sort of strange, I'm not sure if good or bad way though...the original song is sort of flat though imo so I suppose adlibs does lift it up a little bit.

WAIIITTT! Jinho's actually good at english!

This is from 2009:

He seemed pretty fluent in the Instagram direct message he sent out too. I'm wondering if he studied abroad when he was younger maybe. Either way I'm sure he's been diligent with language classes in the past 8 years.
