Can K-Pop Produce Another IU-like Career Path?

Is it possible in today's K-pop to..

- Debut as a singer at a very young age (15), while

- Debuting individually (not in a girl group)

- Have songs produced specifically for her (and eventually producing the song herself)

- Be famous as a solo singer-singwriter 8 years into her career.

To sum up is it possible, for a 15 year old singer to become a trainee, debut as a solo artist, and be successful in 2016?

I ask this because, I think the path for female idols nowadays is to become a trainee, debut in a girl group or join a survival show, branch out to other activities, then have individual careers after. The trend is to always get the trainees in a group.

I think in today's KPOP it could be a long time for that formula to happen. I mean right now, there is no one in the horizon that is debuting as a solo singer.

To clarify, I am not talking about other female soloists. They have their own paths and they are still wildly successful.

The exception could be Ailee but she debuted much later (22/23) and she had buzz going in before her debut.

It starts with BoA though. She debuted when she was 14 in 2000 and practically paved the way for newer Japan promotions to be successful more easily.

Anyway, I guess it depends on how your agency wants to invest on you.

Some companies just found more profits in a group so they don't really invest in solo acts.

Juniel tried and failed

she had potential but FNC didn't even promote her properly. That, and FNC tried to mediaplay her as "the next IU" when she first had her Korean debut, which of course doesn't work because Juniel and IU are different from each other.

I agree that when you look at who are the top female idols as of now in Korea, all are girl group members minus IU (i.e. Suzy, Yoona, Taeyeon, etc.). I think mid-2000s until have now have favored girl group members over soloists in respect to gaining mainstream popularity. It's a cycle though, so I think other soloists following IU's career path can definitely happen again in the future. IU had a combination of talent, luck, and public appeal that helped her gain fame during a time of idol groups. In the past, Jang Nara went through something similar and was also called a nation's little sister.

I think it is possible in the scale of "everything is possible". But in terms of probabilities, it will be hard for a female trainee to be groomed by an agency to debut as a solo artist.

There are several other paths for other solo artists to be successful, such as win survival shows, have their pre-debut video go viral, etc. But as far as an agency investing on a trainee for a straight up solo debut? That will be hard because the market is saturated with girl groups and to appeal internationally you have to package them as a group.

Well the thing about IU is how she straddles different worlds.

There are many talented singer songwriter girls and ladies in Korea, some making a career out of it, if on a smaller scale. They choose different paths. Look at Suran, who's not a 'star' necessarily but made her mark on k-pop as a new producer and songwriter and also does some solo activity at times.

And there are some pop star-like idols debuting.

But IU sort of had the appeal of a singer songwriter from the start while still being pitched as an idol in terms of marketability, CFs, face value. Even before she wrote her songs she had the homegrown charms of covering songs on guitar, while still being that kind of pretty face and good talker TV loves.

And she managed to cash in on her promise in ways that could not be predicted. Who knew she would actually be a great songwriter and get the kind of people who dig Busker Busker and indie acts to fall for her songs as well as still remaining as marketable and prolific on the entertainment scene?

So yeah, she's a special case

But perhaps not as special as is made out here. Look at Baek AYeon - she had like hte biggest song of last year in much the same singer songwriter style as IU. That's the thing of the last few years - the talent shows on TV have surprisingly mostly given us those kinds of winners. Lee Jin Ah, many others. So you could say the potential for more big songwriter stars is high - but it's probably hard to match IU's total package in CF-appeal,  visuals, acting, songwriting etc.
