131120 Ilgan Sports Full Interview w/ Heechul. (Army life hardships, War of Words, Super Junior, SS5, Dating)

Q: After your discharge from the army, what changed the most about you?

-I brightened up. For two years, I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do so after I got discharged, I am happy that I am able to do those things again. I was happier during the day of my discharge more than that day we received our Golden Disk Daesangㅋㅋ Honestly, I had more hardships just for the fact that I became a public service officer. If I was able to go to active service, I would have have lived a life disconnected from the outside and give up everything but since I became a public service officer, it makes you more crazy knowing you can’t do the activities you wanted to do while being part of the society. I wanted to drink and play but since I’m in public service, I needed to control myself in doing such things. Whether I went to a PC room to play games or go outside to just eat a meal, there would be reports about it. For 2 years, I’ve received a lot of notice that I needed to go to the Military Administration for a check-up. Even if I receive unreasonable reports, the Military Administration always investigates them. There was a time I said “Why are you doing this only to me?

Q: You used public transportation in going to work?

-I bow my head and ride the MRT going to work. I would stand in front of the door until I arrive in my stop and I never raised my head. I would count how many stations I’ve passed and after counting, I would quickly get off the my stop. Although there were people who recognized me, I was afraid they would keep talking to me so respectfully would not greet them. I can go to work with my own car but if i do that, I needed to wake up 30 minutes earlier so I used public transportation.

Q: What is your reason for returning through ‘War of Words’?

-It’s a program that is handled by Yeo Woonhyuk CP (PD) who I worked with in Radio Star so I believe in the show. Gura Hyung is a type of person who doesn’t care who does a show but this time, he told me “This is a program wherein you lose more more than you gain someâ€. I bring those words with me. It doesn’t matter to me if I get criticized but i think it harms relationships. It’s uncomfortable and difficult to talk about someone you know/friend.

-The truth is because of something I said in War of Words, i’m being highly criticized but I don’t really care. Because cyber bullies’ comments are not considered as ‘feed backs’. All the things I have said and done that are within the limit, my company even knows all about it. That’s why they didn’t oppose to me working in War of Words.

Q: The topic you found the hardest to talk about?

-I don’t really mind talking about SM. SM knows the main concept of the show and whatever I talk about SM in the show, my company has already approved of it. But I found myself in a sticky situation when I needed to talk about a celebrity I’m close with who is from the same company as me. Even if I talk in circles so I wouldn’t talk about such topics, Gura Hyung will still surely ask. Although everything I said were spoken in honesty, but even so, the things that needs to be protected should be protected. Having that said, whatever gets cut out in <War of Words> aren’t important. What’s more important for me is my personal connections and relationships with people. If I have to sell my relationships for broadcasts, then I don’t want to do broadcasts.

Q: Super Junior’s Super Show is now an established brand as a concert.

-Two years ago, when we did overseas concerts, it wasn’t this much people. A few days ago, we performed in Osaka, Japan and for two days, a total of 90,000 fans came to see us. I was really shocked. While I was in our boot camp [during the beginning of his army life], I heard Super Show’s scale got bigger. While I was a public service officer, Super Junior fill-ed up even Tokyo Dome. We weren’t even a group that aimed to reach the Japanese market but we did well all the same which made me more surprised. We don’t even appear on variety shows in Japan, we haven’t done any proper promotions in music shows in Japan but every time we do concerts, we gather so much fans that it amazes me.

Q: During that time, you haven’t gotten into a relationship scandal. Do you have a secret for it?

-Maybe because I talk about the women I like openly? I meet my female friends outside and even eat meals with them so rumors don’t really come up. I don’t meet with just one female friend. I take turns meeting different friends. Maybe that’s the reason no one can figure out whoever it is I’m dating hahaha I upload through SNS photos of me with my close female friends like Son Dambi & Taeyeon and cross arms and put my shoulder around them so people won’t really care whoever I date now. I even tell my close female friends endearments like “honey(yeobo), my girl†etc. Even Sajang-nim doesn’t know the restaurants I often go to, nor the people I date. Haha

Q: Do you have thoughts in having an open relationship?

-Each person’s life is different. When someone gets in a relationship scandal, even if they’re clearly dating, won’t there still be people who would insist that they aren’t? I don’t want to be that way, closing my eyes and avoiding something by refusing to face the problem. But if i get an article about details of my relationship, even if it’s true, I will not acknowledge it.ㅋㅋ

Q: You recently did a cosplay event at Incheon airport for Super Junior Debut 8th anniversary. How do you feel about 8th anniversary?

-I don’t feel anything. In 5th anniversary, I felt surprised, ‘Wa! We endured 5 years’, but I feel nothing about 8th anniversary. If you look at couples, it’s the first 100 days, 200 days anniversarys that are important and 3rd 5th anniversary aren’t as important. I think it’s same logic as that. We’ve been through a lot of trials, so I do think many times about ‘how many more years will Super Junior go on?’. The conclusion we came up with is ‘If we trust in each other, we’ll be able to (go on) till we grow old and die’. There are many groups that disband because they couldnt trust each other, or have a dispute with their company. How long we’ll be able to continue depends on our faith (in each other). Members know that well.

Q: Are there any rules members have to keep the trust?

-Yes. We promised not to get tangled in ‘woman’ problems. If a member were to say ‘she’s cute’ while watching TV, another member cannot approach her even if (the first member) weren’t going to date her. It may sound weird, but to be honest, the girl’s opinion doesn’t matter. Even if she likes another member, for us, the first person to choose has the authority. We also talk about ‘let’s not make troubles/accidents.’ But I think that’s hard to control as a human.

Q: Goal as Super Junior, and a personal goal?

-Cool side? New music? I don’t need any of those. I just wish Super Junior will continue for a long time. We’ve already done ‘cool’ and ‘cute’ as much as we wanted. We’ve been ‘Presidents of Elementary Kids’ with ‘Miracle’, and have experienced global popularity with ‘Sorry Sorry’. Now our goal is for Super Junior to have activities for a long time. (All) Members can renew their contract with the company, or not. But that’s not what’s important to us. No matter what the situation is, we don’t want to fight with each other, and continue working happily for a long time. Even if Super Junior isn’t able to do activities, I want to keep the relationship with members. I’ve been through everything with the members since I was little. I don’t even want to imagine parting from members who knows me the best. I may not be the best singer yet, but I’ve done everything I’ve wanted. So I don’t have a personal goal. I wish Super Junior would continue enjoying doing activities, for a long time.
