We're hiring like crazy at my company right now, so I had a funny thought the other day. What would each member's job title be if the band was a corporation?

 

Sungjin, President/CEO - Not a figurehead, but a fully functional executive, responsible for the general vision, direction, and development of the group and members.

 

Jae, Director of Marketing - Responsible for capitalizing the group's social media marketing presence. #HashtagKing

 

Young K, Artistic Director - Oversees the group's artistic process.

 

Wonpil, Director of Human Resources - Responsible for the well-being and support of all members. Provides counsel and mediation when necessary.

 

Dowoon, Receptionist - The newest hire, responsible for greeting all visitors.

First Time - A nice, bouncy song to start the album. I love the major/minor key changes in the chorus. 9/10

 

Blood - Yeessss, bring on the ambient. This song sounds like the upgraded cousin to "Out of My Mind," which is appropriate since it's the same co-composers. The chorus is such a PARTAY!! 10/10

 

Letting Go - All hail the title song. Again with the awesome major/minor changes in the chorus, thank you, Hong Ji Sang and collapsedone. The orgel at the end was a perfect detail. 9/10

 

Sing Me - Love the synths and pounding beat. It's a jam, but dreamy and expansive at the same time. I do hear a bit of Henry's sound in it.   10/10

 

I Hope - Very 90s, which is always a win with me. 8/10

 

Hunt - Finally, all this funk perfection captured in the studio. 8/10

 

General commentary - The vocals are beyond amazing on this album. We all know they're great, but they just sound all kinds of unleashed this time around. Everything is so raw and un-processed, you can literally feel their voices. I know at least some of that passion came from Junhyeok leaving. They channeled all those emotions so beautifully into each track.

 

If The Day was gold, this album is frickin' DIAMOND.

Seriously, I almost couldn't vote either. Blood was pulling me one way and Sing Me was pulling me the other way. Every time I listened to either of them, I was newly convinced that that one was my favorite. And midway between deciding between those two, Letting Go kept creeping up and trying to usurp them. Stay in your lanes, you damn songs!

They sounded beautiful. I'm so used to their fancams and buskings, though, it was odd to hear such loud TV backtracking. I'm like, turn that ish off, these boys don't need it!

I keep seeing comments from new fans everywhere like, "Wow, 4 out of 5 can sing!" Reminded me that this is practically unheard of with other groups. I sometimes forget how spoiled we are by DAY6. 

 

Sungjin already got better at finding the camera, good for him. Brian and Wonpil were already pretty quick yesterday. Jae sings with his eyes closed 99% of the time, so I guess he's just like, F it.

Just what I need to start off my morning - Wonpil and Dowoon's English.   And is it me or is Sungjin actually lowkey good at English? His accent sounds almost conversational.

All right, y'all know I don't take any prisoners with my polls. We have reached that bless-ed point in our bias group's career where we can experience the glorious agony that is.... song vs. song. 

 

Freely vs. Sing Me - Freely is a certified jam, makes me want to jump and run, but Sing Me makes me want to fly. 

 

Like That Sun vs. Blood - Yes, I gotta see blood, boy.

 

Congratulations vs. Letting Go - Initially I thought I liked Congratulations better, but after a day of listening to Letting Go repeatedly, it slowly came alive. There are a lot of layers, and the composition overall is a really smart mix of things -- little instrument details, clever chord progressions, vocal styling and quality. Really solid track, both tangibly and intangibly.

 

Habits vs. First Time - I prefer Habits' urban pianos and off beat. 

 

Colors vs. Hunt - Colors is just godly. Almost no song in K-pop beats it.

 

Out of My Mind vs. Hope/Wish - I like the guitar riffs in Out of My Mind better. Hope/Wish gets a bit relentless. 

 

Interestingly, people's favorites were more spread out on The Day. Colors had the majority, but Congrats and even Out of My Mind had their fair share as well. With Daydream, everyone pretty much flocked to Letting Go, maybe because it was the closest thing the album had to a power ballad. Overall, I give it to Daydream, largely because it has the holy trinity of Blood, Letting Go, and Sing Me.

Honestly, though, I've been lazy, I haven't even seen every picture in the Daydream album photobook yet. My copy hasn't arrived, and I haven't looked up scans, but the few I've seen all seem to be the same dilemma -- face turned away, lens flare, too far, rinse, repeat. What does a girl have to do for some simple face pictures, like damn.

First physical CD I've bought since about 2001. My co-worker handed it to me and went, "What are you getting all the way from South Korea?"       

 

And yes, thumbing through the photo book confirms all my suspicions. Full of shadowed faces, lens flares, and graininess. Sigh. Beautiful stuff, just not badge material. I'll make a few mockups when I get home, but most shots definitely don't qualify.
