HOW TO MAKE A GIF ♥
What is a Kpop forum without gifs, right?
Being somehow new to kpop, I didn't know how to make GIFs before. I just used to google and look for the gif I want.
But what if I can't find any? Or what if there is this specific video that I like and want to make a gif out of? Wouldn't it be cool if you can make our very own personalized gif?
Things/programs you will need:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Quicktime Player (Photoshop will not convert video to layers without it, except if you are using version cs6)
- Youtube Downloader
Any program will do but I personally recommend Youtube Downloader
Make sure it's in the highest quality or 1040p for better looking gifs, and it has to be in .mp4 format.
Step 2: Open Photoshop and "Convert Video Frames To Layers"
*Do not use File>Open
Select the video and Load.
Step 3: Select Range
For short videos, like videos a minute long or less, you can choose the option "From Beginning to End"
For longer videos, like MVs, or if you know the part of the video you want to make a gif of choose "Selected Range Only"
To choose: Click then use shift to determine the range. Kind of like how you use shift in choosing the files you want to highlight in Windows ^ ^ The darker grey area indicates the range you have selected.
You can also play and use the left and right arrows to review the video before choosing.
Keep in mind that there is a 500 frames limit, so make sure the range fits enough. ^ ^
Recommended setting is every 2 layers, but you can choose 3 or 4. Experiment
This will probably take a long time to load since it's a large file, also depending on your computer speed. Mine is a bit slow so I have to be patient. ^^
Step 4: Crop and Resize
I do this first because it makes my computer slow to have a gif in a very large size opened.
Crop to remove certain things like broadcast logo, unwanted space and objects etc. Or just to simply focus on a certain thing or someone ♥
After doing this, proceed to resize.
Alt + Ctrl + I or Image > Image Size
OR YOU CAN DO THIS ALL LATER. When you have learned to do it, you can decide on your own which technique is better for you.
Step 5: Deleting Frames and Layers
By using Shift again, select the range of the layers you want to delete. Do not press "delete" to delete the layers, you have to click the trash button found at the bottom.
You can leave the frames as is, but if you want you can also delete them for organizational purposes ^ ^
Step 6: Enhancements
This part is optional but if you want to make your gifs really pretty there are certain enhancements you can do. Like Vibrance, Brightness, Sharpening. But I'll do this in another post ^ ^
All of those can be done by doing this:
You can experiment ^^ Just make sure the enhancement layer is on top of the gif's layers.
You can further crop, resize, or whatever it is that you wish to do at this point.
Step 7: Setting the time/delay
This is the speed of the gif
First, select all frames
And then by clicking the time at the bottom of the frames, choose the "Other" options to manually set the delay.
Depending on your preference, adjust it. 0.03 is really fast, and 0.2 seconds can already be really slow. My usual gif speed is 0.09.
You can use the playback options at the bottom of the animation frame for a quick preview
Last step is Saving!
Click File > Save for Web and Devices
A window will appear in which you can further adjust settings like Image Size, tweak Quality or preview your gif before saving it.
Make sure the Looping Option is set to "Forever"
Hit Save and Name your file and that's it
This is my end product. No enhancements yet and no tweaking, just cropping and resizing. ♥
Good luck ♥
I hope this will be useful to everyone!
A tutorial from straycat:
I made some gif tutorials using the old version of Photoshop (with ImageReady) + listed some alternative programs for those who don't want/can't use Photoshop
