this article is long as hell

basically this pastor and his family embezzled ~$500million from the churches funds

it's stuff like this that makes me disgusted with organized religion

what exactly is the purpose of it?

your faith should be just between you and god, not between you and religious semi-corporate bureaucracy

Pretty much any organised group has a chance of being corrupt.

The people who are in charge of these groups are the ones with the greatest power and everyone known the saying "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely".

To ask for the end of all organisations would be to ask for total anarchy- which isn't good for anyone. What needs to be done instead is that a system of greater checks and balances should be established.

I'm not talking about all organizations

I'm talking about religious organizations

Faith should be personal, not a communal "You must believe what I believe" cult

The basis if some faiths(?) is community so that would be contradictory. It's just a place to gather, and although many are corrupt, corruption is everywhere.

Everyone has a different way of experiencing their own religion. Some people like to do things by themselves, some people like being with others .There's nothing wrong with either.

Its basically the same argument about homeschooling vs. actual schools

Whatever fits the individual more is what the individual should choose, no one has a right to dictate what they should or shouldn't do

Anything consisting of large groups of people leading others will have corruption in it. I left the Christian religion years ago for various reasons but even I know that you cannot judge the entire religion based on some asshole and his pals stealing from the church. The Christian religion along with other world religions have good points that should not be ignored, people shouldn't turn a blind eye to that. The leaders of these religions should do their best to get rid of the poison within their ranks.

Now if only people were more concerned with what their political leaders do, this world would be a much better place...

Probably not on this scale, as the article says this is the *world's* largest mega-church, so they have more money coming into their coffers.

You could make the argument that it's not just embezzlement that indicates corruption in churches, but church leaders living in massive mansions and driving expensive cars and wearing designer clothes, all paid for by their followers... despite Mark 10:25 (ESV) "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.â€

Which really should be a hint to everybody involved in mega-churches, from the leaders down to the followers.

I know the Catholic church has quite a centralized system

I wonder if this occurs at the higher levels of the Catholic church as well
