Black Culture in Japan?

Is the Black Culture in Japan really that racist? And when one does try to emulate their idol/favorite artists by darkening their skin, is it mocking and hating them?

I've been wondering this when I was watching this video which spawned this thread.

Is this video really racist and blackface? ^ What is your view on this video?

And what about this?

If one individual really adores one culture/stereotypical culture (which is what they've known through media), is bad that they badly want to be like that?

Something I've been thinking while I was watching Kawaii Pateen's videos about some of their topics including Kuro Gyaru and Black Culture and having a Black Lolita. Their reasoning for these videos is to make an awareness on other people's individual and culture through the eyes of Japanese people that live in Japan.

So I ask what is the difference of Blackface/Yellowface/Whiteface and these videos of people doing makeup on Ganguro, Ulzzang, Cali Girls, etc?

(I'm ready for the negs if there are some)

as a black person it's kind of cool that there are japanese people who are so into our "culture" (or what they think our culture is) they are willing to forgo their own mainstream culture and learn about ours. but just like gross weeaboos or koreaboos in america those people have only a shallow idea of what it means to be black and what AA culture is and only know what they see in mass media, so they're pretty misguided. i mean, i think it's cool when people connect with AA music or slang or style but usually when people from outside the culture take it to that level of emulation there's just something missing.

I see that this thread is most likely going to go LEFT, very soon.

Let me take a seat. I wonder if OH can handle another discussion on race without inevitably showing their asses.

Based on that video, those "B-style" are more likely to be like the japanese counterpart of weeaboo. They dont seem to make fun of black culture, they're just fans so I dont consider this racism.

I heard that japanese people dont like the people of their nationality to act and behave like they're 'americans' (watch here) just like how weeabs act like they're japanese.

Well, that's my opinion. Feel free to neg if you dont like it

I personally don't think it's ever been fueled by a negative connotation or meant to be derogatory at all, so I wouldn't call it racist. Maybe ignorant at most?

Then again I am not a part of AA culture so I'm not sure what is ignorant/offensive or not.

yeah it's Gyaru make up

I ever read that Gyaru make up is there to break the cultural stereotype of traditional Japanese beauties where Japansese consider white skin is beautiful, refering to literally white powder that's used by girls like geisha (the only example I know).

Gyaru make up is there to rebel that beauty standard

for racist, if the context was not meant to hurt dark-skinned people I don't think it's racist

maybe this video will help, I remember watching this a while ago

Thanks I've been wanting to watch this but I've been putting it off.

I wanna know if the way most Japanese people see and view Blacks and African Descent the same way they are viewed outside. Especially in Korea and China, more so in Korea.

The black face in japan is a damn mess , Im happy to see that they love or appreciate their fellow partners in minority but @ the black face nah..u can appreciate a culture without doing something that is seen as offensive to that culture.

Lol, it seems Onehallyu's resident racists are either asleep/busy or they learnt their lesson after the last debacle involving race..

Many black ppl wear lighter shade of makeup or have colored hair that is not their own. Are they racist towards whites?

I don't understand when black people are like: You can't have dreads. You can't wear cornrows. You can't do this and that.

Yet they go and use /wear stuff from other cultures too, and no one says anything. Because literally no one cares? Lol It's not something bad.

And @ OP, i'm not black, but i just feel awkward watching them do shit like that. I don't think it's racist at all or that it's inherently bad per se but it's just so unnatural and tryhard. It's like when white/black people try and act japanese or korean. Fucking embarrassing.
