last week when minzy news came out, someone also randomly decided to do a ot5 appreciation post and lo and behold the first 2 pages were pure mess.

[TRANS] ONEW COSMOPOLITAN INTERVIEW (MAY 2016 ISSUE)

I heard it’s your first time in Bali?

O: I think it’s much hotter than I expected? Haha. I think people here are so relaxed. So I think I’ve become much more relaxed too and have been taking my time.

There’s another place just as hot as Bali. It’s in front of a TV that’s airing <Descendants of the Sun>

O: I’m glad that many people are loving it. To be honest, I felt a great burden. It was so much that I never let my script go out my hands during the 6 months of shooting. I read the script as soon as I woke up and practiced it until I fall asleep.

Where did this burden come from?

O: I did musicals before too and also appeared in sitcoms but since it was my first time in a conventional drama I worried a lot about causing trouble to other people. It’s an area that I just started taking a step into so even if I tried my best I worried that I might not satisfy the audience’s expectation.

What was the hardest thing while preparing?

O: The hardest thing was reducing the gap between ‘Lee Chihoon’ and ‘Onew’. I had many worries about how to unravel ‘Lee Chihoon’ who was different from me. ‘Lee Chihoon’ is a character with a great emotional roller coaster. The bright side of ‘Lee Chihoon’ in the drama is similar to myself, but he gets frightened a lot and cries a lot too. But because I’m actually not a type of person who cries often it was hard to act at first.

Despite of such burden, is there a reason why you chose to act in <Descendants of the Sun>?

O: Um, Hyegyo noona? Haha. I’m joking. When I first received the scenario, the first thing I thought was ‘Ah. I should not miss this work’. I understood what it means to read a script in a breeze when I saw the scenario. Besides, looking at the directors, writers, actors who’s appearing in the drama, there was no reason to not do this work.

How do you feel when you watch your own acting? What kind of things do you mainly monitor on?

O: I actually still feel embarrassed when monitoring my acting. I feel nervous just by watching it. I monitored the drama in Bali too, I felt my pronunciations were unclear so I thought I needed to work more on that. What I focus mainly when monitoring is sunbae actor’s acting. I learn a lot of things when I look at things like, they expressed in this way in this scene.

What was the reaction from SHINee members?

O: After the end of first day of shooting, I remember all SHINee members asked whether Hyegyo noona was pretty. Haha. They supported me saying since it’s my first time in a conventional drama don’t be nervous and do well just like I practiced. Members are always supporting me behind my back so I received a great strength.

I think the year 2015 must have been a first step in start of something new and a turning point.

O: Yes. It was a year that I received lots of motivation. While preparing for this work, I thought I was looking at myself back when I was practicing before making a debut as a singer. The tingle of excitement, passion, desire that I have forgot about motivated me a lot. Of course I worked hard as SHINee but I had thoughts about whether I became a little loosened up so I think I looked back over to the past. My enthusiasm in singing have been on fire recently so I’m planning on creating my own space to practice alone.

It’s been 8 years since you’ve been working as SHINee. I think the teamwork is still great.

O: All the members, including myself, think ‘We should always be together’. I think we’ve become somewhat more loving toward each other because we have lots of individual promotional activities and the time we spend away from each other has increased. So it’s always fun when we meet.

What do you usually do when you have free time?

O: Usually I sleep or meet friends. These days, I go to famous restaurants or watch a movie with my mum when I’m having a hard time. When I was younger, days when I went home because I had no schedule I would just say hi and go out to meet friends. But I suddenly thought when else was I going to spend time with my parents if it wasn’t during time like this so I try to stay home more these days. Thinking about it, I think I’ve grown up a little? Haha.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?

O: I think I will be busy due to Asia tour until mid-May. If I receive offers on great work, I want to do acting and I also want to try hosting a radio as a DJ. It won’t be fun if I think it’s all just work. I hope I can enjoy myself more thinking work as not just only work.

Amazing interview, I like the parts that you underlined. I'm so happy that Onew have a new found enthusiasm in singing. And it shows! Not only Onew tho', binge watching the fancams of their newest performances my first thought was along the lines of "damn they're on fire". I hope Onew get more acting gigs in the future, I can't imagine him as radio DJ  :lol: but it's his wish, so hopefully it comes true.

 

Glad that they support each others solo activities, hope they find ways to communicate with each other even tho they are busy with individual activities (Japan tours is a blessing since it means ot5 time).

 

This interview makes me remember a saying.. "If a friendship lasts longer than 7 years, it will lasts a lifetime"

 

But actually, backed by researches.. "Friendships, are not just formed through choice (your taste, preferences, picky-ness). They are also largely shaped by opportunity (where you are, who else is there, how often you cross paths). ... 

 

And one of the most important ingredients in bonding isn’t similarity or meeting our pre-selected criteria, but spending time together…repeatedly." (Mollenhorst) 

 

"Many relationships fall apart because people no longer have the opportunity to be together in the same context. ... The influence of social context on longevity was remarkably similar for friends and acquaintances — irrespective of the closeness of the relationship. ...

 

One implication: If a friendship is meaningful, it needs to be nurtured." (Levine)
 
My conclusion, most of the times we lose friends not because of personal feelings/internal problems but because of circumstances. The strength of friendship is tested when there are not much time or opportunities to spend together, whether both parties let the friendship drift away or make effort to nurture the "bond". So, whatever their circumstances, hopefully Shinee will always choose to make their friendships works.
