How does one understand when one is listening to them?

How does one improve this skill?

Its one thing to just listen and another to understand what exactly is expected of an answer or continuation of and I m curious to find out the answers from people on topic of what defines and makes a person a good listener.

my friends say I'm a good listener. I don't actively try to be but I'm a generally quiet person irl, and I'm always happy to just sit and let them vent about what's bothering them or think out loud about something they've been wondering about, and offering my thoughts or advice if they ask for it.

imo the secret is to just not make the conversation about yourself, which might sound easy, but you'd be surprised how many of us do it subconsciously

Oh well... you could just let them vent everything out without judging.. I usually avoid asking them questions or offer them advices when the other person is speaking. Though I might offer them my advice if they ask for it. But I wonder why those who ask for my advice end up in a bigger mess.. kidding... I don't offer them advice directly(I don't even take my thoughts seriously lol) I end up asking them what they think of the situation they are in and try to get them involved in figuring out solution!

It actually gets on my nerves if the person I'm speaking to starts their own conversation or adds the "oh.. the same thing happened to me once." sentence.

You could try to actively listen to what the person is talking about without spacing out... it really shows when you pretend to listen!
