So what do people think about ageism? Do you think it's a serious issue?

What kind of things do you associate with being young and being old?

How many positive stereotypes can you think of for someone who is 60+?

I usually associate innocence with being young, not as in teenagers and up, but children specifically. There are always exceptions though. One thing I don't like is when people completely brush off a teenager, child, or such doing something wrong just because they're a teenager/child/whatever. I guess that's a type of ageism?

Positive sterotypes for older people... They've been through a lot of hardships and probably gained wisdom through it. Negative would be that they're very set in their ways and old fashioned. I'm thinking of a specific relative who will be ninety soon with those answers though. I'm sure others differ.

I'm 21 and sometimes I call myself old *shrug*
I mean, the standard for desirableness in the west is supposed to be a girl that just hit their 18th birthday, so I'm dried up by that standard.

And yeah, ageism is a real thing, directed even more greatly towards women (since a woman's value is based on her looks more than experience). But the reverse can also happen, when a young person is considered inexperienced just because of their age and therefore unfit.

If women didn't have a biological clock like men don't, I think things would be different.

I used to worry a lot about the fact that eventually I'm going to be old like everyone else will be whether I want to be or not. But then I realized that since I'm still really young and youthful, I should live without these type of worries and be happy while I still have my youth. Wrinkles are the only thing that still scare me now.

Well I think ageist views are quite destructive the older we get. I mean people don't really argue or disagree over many negative stereotypes that are held against older people, especially when you think about various standards of beauty and how much they are focused on being young.

Although aging is an inevitable process, being old is more dependent on context and views of society. Just like the views on maturity and how this is constructed based on the society you live in and it shapes what expectations others have of you. How often do you hear people being told they are too old or too young for something when it actually has nothing to do with their age or their stage of development but because of stereotypical views that are widely accepted about age?

Anyway some people might think there is a specific age at which you become old but usually aging is a gradual process and there isn't specific moment where you suddenly transform. Being old isn't just about age but a combination of physical development, personal views about aging as well as cultural and social views. A lot of the time because people know they can't avoid aging they think the also can't avoid being old.

I hate it when people think they deserve respect simply because they have 5 years more of life.

Age=/=instant respect

: ( so true,

i dont know why you got negged. your egg banks usually dry up by 50 but most rich pimp divorcee men wont even consider women who are older than 30

50? Women shouldn't have kids after 35 because the risk of a high risk pregnancy increases greatly after that age. Men can have kids when they're in their 80s.
