Crayon Pop (크레용팝) Official Thread

The fan chants from Crayon Pop's more recent performances have been relatively average compared to other popular kpop acts.  As for the origin of fan chants in kpop, I'm not quite sure but they have definitely been around since the mid 90's (

.e.
).  As to why fans do what they do, I can only make a few assumptions.  Fan clubs organizing and creating fan chants to show their artist(s) their support, the desire by fans to participate in the performance, and general groupthink among fans probably contribute to the reasons why fan chants occur.  You also have to keep in mind that live performances, both televised and at concerts/festivals, are much more common in Korea than it is in many Western countries.  Additionally, fan clubs are fairly organized across many fandoms and both the size of South Korea and the proximity of major venues around Seoul and other major cities helps out with the organizing aspect.  This puts both artist(s) and fans in a unique position to interact on a regular basis during the time the artist(s) are promoting their single/album.

For a nugu group that anyone barely knew until Bar Bar Bar, their fan chants are actually insane. Compare what C-POP gets to, say, even a group like A Pink or Dal Shabet. Obviously, they arent getting SNSD/2ne1/popular boy band fanchants but they are impressive nonetheless. Crayon Pop's fanbase is impressive comparatively.

Agree with everything else.

Another easy way to distinguish between ChoA and Way is that Choa likes to smirk. Way usually smiles fully, while ChoA smiles to the left.

That's quite true. It's actually really easy to tell the difference between the two. They act quite different at times

Still haven't watched it. Still won't.

I love the girls but I refuse to help Sony Korea out and I hope that this convinces Chrome to do their own thing. This is exactly what I feared with the partnership. Exactly.

I am just glad it was a new version and not the new single.

Well I'm still gonna defend the girls. This isn't their fault and I'm not going to stop being a Crayon Pop fan because of one MV I don't like. At the same time, you can be a fan and not automatically love everything the girls do ^_^

I just knew this was going to happen with the Sony Korea deal. It was almost predictable. They are doing the same thing with Wa$$up as in putting their music videos on a VEVO that the target market can't watch. It's so shortsighted and pointless that it's laughable. It's also frustrating.

Crayon Pop works best when their ideas are fresh and organic. Not this. *sigh*

boombox is the radio that they carrying around...

i know the MV is poorly edited and lacked creativity but if the fans keep talking about that make me feel annoyed...  I believe they also the victim on this.

This MV will stay like that and never change. For now let us defend our girl from butthurt/haters.

The thing is they are going to be a top group soon (hopefully). They are going to have haters regardless of what we do or say as fans. We gotta get used to that. Perhaps it's my experience as a long standing SONE that helps me prepare for that.

Haters are a good thing. It means you matter. I'd rather have haters than have no one care at all, which is how it was about 3-4 months ago. The girls have made fantastic strides...but this is what happens. You get haters. Your decisions are critiqued a little more. Part of the process sadly.

For me, I'll probably watch the MV sometime tonight, knowing me.

Yep.

According to this blog: http://blog.daum.net/bulgachoc/70 (Posted on 2013/08015),

Most of the staff were let go or allowed to have their contracts end before "bar bar bar" because of severe financial problems. When it was written (8/15) Chrome still hadnt reached the break even point.

TAKE THIS WITH  A GRAIN OF SALT SINCE IT WAS WRITTEN BY AN OUTSIDER. Note: Sony formed a partnership with Chrome on 8/12.

Honestly, it makes sense remembering how that time period went. Chrome in general was pretty quiet and that may have something to do with a lack of funds.

I want to give my take into this. I say this as an observer of how truly organic the subbing team's development was and how quickly it became of the best subbing teams in KPOP IMO.

First of all, I don't want to hate on Sheldon Kim on getting a job. Ultimately, he came before everyone else and that seniority probably was a deciding factor. As good as CK's subbing team was, they were still quite new. Yes, of course, they were a lot more prolific with their subbing (as in they actually tried) but Sheldon has just been around a lot longer. With that said...

Crayon Pop's popularity is, at its core, a grassroots movement. The community of this thread, r/crayonpop, AKP's original Crayon Pop thread before it got borked, and the #crayonpop chat along with the K-Sketchbooks who do the dirty work. We all stick together, communicate, and make sure that information moves efficiently. You see how fast fancams get passed out, how fast subbing is with CK's team. That should tell you everything.

So it is a bit annoying that someone who really has never really participated in the community and barely subbed at all ends up getting this chance. For me, it kind of is a slap in the face especially when I've seen many of the members of CK's team around since i started in late 2012. It's depressing and I feel for CK, as much as he's being humble right now.

With all of that said, I'm happy Crayon Pop TV is finally getting English subs so we dont get the constant requests for them over and over.

Gummi's sheer goofiness is actually quite underrated. She is fantastic at facial expressions but she isn't Soyul/twins level of adorable and she doesn't have the sheer off-the-wall weirdness that Ellin has so it may not be as noticeable.

Just watch the Christmas video. She is by far the goofiest member in that video besides, maybe, ChoA

I think what also helps Soyul's popularity is that she normally has a bigger presence in their music videos, usually getting the spotlight more often than the others because she has bigger vocal parts and starts the first verse in the songs as well  (i.e. Bing Bing, Saturday Night, Dancing Queen).

Ellin, on the other side, plays the most minor role song wise, so she's often goes unnoticed in the MVs.

Now, if I were to be completely honest, my bias, Soyul, probably has the least personality of the members on the Crayon Pop TV episodes. She seems like the quietest member off stage and doesn't bust out the funny lines like Ellin and the Twins. What Ellin lacks in the vocal department in the songs/music videos, she makes up for in Crayon Pop TV or variety shows like All the Kpop, where her aggressive and funny personality shines. Her blunt honesty with CEO Hwang on their show is one of my favorite interactions. Also, ChoA and Way pretty much own CP TV as well for me.

I'd agree. I say Soyul has random acts of cuteness where she makes you smile but then disappears but I also do think that the cameraman tends to focus more on Ellin/the twins as a whole on CPOP-TV. I'm not sure if that's by design or just by the nature of the girls. Soyul does have the most draw on music videos and on stage so she has her share of fans.

They don't have anyone in their roster to play that role authentically. When I look at After School, Miss A, Nine Muses, 4Minute, T-ara, Sistar, etc, I definitely see people in that group that exemplify sexy and were molded to be sexy. Girls Day was able to make that cute to sexy transformation because even during their initial cute phase, I always saw the sexy potential in the girls. APink, though in cute mode, can easily pull off sexy in the future when you look at their members (esp. Naeun, Bomi, Hayoung, Namjoo, Chorong, lately on stage ... Heh, Eunji's still wholesome to me).

CP girls do not have the same physical attributes or that innate sexual aura of a Nana, Jooyeon, Min, Fei, Hyuna, Jiyeon, Hyomin, Kyungri, Bora etc. They are almost TOO cute in a way (example: Soyul lamenting on how she looks like an elementary school kid) and even without the helmets and tracksuits, they have an unusual look for Kpop girl idols. Chrome sort of shut the door on sexy, when CEO Hwang chose these girls for their qualities.

Yep. The ONLY member I could see actually pulling it off is Gummi because of her maturity. Soyul definitely cant and Ellin usually looks forced when she tries. The twins probably couldnt even though I'd give an edge to Way because of her aura and she is really good with her looks.
