[SK] How does the Korean media work? (Specifically Media Play)

Why does it seem so unethical? I mean "media play" by huge corporations would have to be done very covertly in most western countries right? Wouldn't there be a huge backlash if it was discovered that CNN, NPR, the times, BBC, and the like were publishing articles basically sponsored or published by big businesses that were meant to control and influence public opinion?

However, before I make any assumptions, does anyone know how media play specifically works?

Make random articles about celebs doing normal stuff. Profit. That's media play in a nutshell.

The thing is media play is more of a pr stunt by western standards. Advertising without truly advertising. It can go well or horribly wrong. But there's nothing truly unethical about doing pr because no one is that dumb to eat up what they say word for word. Remember the BP oil spill? Months afterwards oil companies were running ads that they loved the environment to help their image.

Paying journalists to release a bunch of articles (can be pre-written by people in the company or the reporter's own work) about a specific event on Korean portals all during a specific time frame is usually how it works. It can be used to, for example, cover something up or boost someone's image or gather hype etc.

This happens everywhere though.
