[REAL TALK] EverlastingBlackjack's official statement on 2NE1

So 2NE1 is more or less over. Even though YG says he's going to promote them as a trio, I don't see that going anywhere. This is not something that 2NE1 can easily come back from.

What this says for the respective careers of all four members is unclear. CL has her intangible but confirmed US debut, and Dara has acting, but the future of Minzy and Bom concerns me. I really don't see 2NE1 continuing past this point, and whether or not Minzy and Bom want, or are able to continue to make music is vague at best.

At this point the best we can hope for is that CL can succeed in the US and Dara can become a full time actress, and that Bom and Minzy have both accumulated enough money respectively to either retire or pursue whatever avenue they so choose, because, I'll be honest, I'm not terribly interested in a 2NE1 comeback sans Minzy, because that's really not 2NE1.

This is a good opportunity to talk about the dysfunctional nature of the K-pop industry and its negative ramifications; the abdication of Minzy from 2NE1 and, similarly, Jessica from SNSD, two of the most hugely successful girl groups in Korea and worldwide, to me says a lot about how toxic the industry really is. I won't liken it to slave labour, because that's going too far, but the inflexibility of a K-pop singer's career and the complete lack of autonomy that they seem to have over their own career decisions is not a positive thing. I'm actually glad that CL's focus has shifted to her US activities now, because it will be a far more positive career for her.

This day is an end of an era for K-pop, with the popular artists of the last few years systematically fading into obscurity. This is natural, it happens in every music industry as interests change, but 2NE1's career has been far too short to already be considered yesterday's news. It's really, really sad.

I really like your point of view. I agree with everything. Although I don't know if 2NE1 will be unsuccessful, cause they're 2NE1. There are several kpop bands with members leaving, and they've recovered. Only time will tell.
