A post where I told a user to avoid using the word 'jap' was negged....

because they used it during ww2 to talk about the japanese

It was only used by the US though so i dont see why it would be offensive for non US people to use it since there was no Anti-Japanese propaganda in other countries. Its like during the holocaust, Jewish people were referred to as Jews in Anti-Jewish propaganda yet everyone still uses the term Jews outside of Germany and it isn't seen as racist or offensive.

a lot of people on oh are dumb and uneducated :/

Not really, the term Jap was used in AMERICAN Anti-Japanese propaganda so people outside of the US wouldnt know about it being offensive since we dont learn about American history and the term has no racist connotations outside of the US since it was only used in America.

because Japanese people take offence to it wherever you're from. not hard to understand. I'm not from the US and I've been aware of it being a slur since youth simply by inferring it from context. my Japanese boyfriend has been called it in the past and he detests it and takes great offence to it

if someone asks you not to use it and you weren't aware of it being a slur, all you have to do is politely apologise and stop using it rather than try to convince them you should be allowed to because you didn't personally invent the term. it's not about you

actually in America, given the context, "jews" can be considered racist and offensive

Did i say its about me ? In the UK its not a racial slur, i have Japanese friends who refer to themselves as Japs and refer to me as a brit, if someone asked me not to use it because they find it offensive then fair enough, i wouldnt say it but my Japanese friends have told me its not offensive to them since its short for Japanese and they dont care if someone says the word Japs. I havent met anyone who thinks Japs is a racial slur or has used it in a racist way, a lot of people use it as a shorter term for Japanese.

Everyone has different feelings about the term, some countries find it more offensive than other. Its not just about you and your boyfriend who find it offensive.

OMG YES! why can't the rest of the world think like this? if someone tells you that a term is offensive, just learn from it and stop using it. they shouldn't have to go back and tell you the entire history of the word or term and why it's offensive and you shouldn't respond to them with justification about how you thought it was ok, how you wouldn't mind if it were you, how people around you say it all the time, etc.  the fact that you offended someone should be enough to get you to stop

I don't why people are trying to defend a racial slur.

It's rude, it has a strong historical meaning that hurt many people. If you aren't a person of that race then DO NOT say "it's okay" when it's not. You don't know what it's like to be them and what they feel by being of their race.

If a word hurts someone, you should at least have the decency to not say it, whether its a slur or not.

it's not something as universal as the n word but I think it's still best to err on the side of caution and not use it (I'm from the US so)

some people just don't know or are from places where it's not considered as such but if someone tells you they don't like it then you should respect it
