What are the chances that I.O.I threaten the popularity of current rising Kpop trends?

I don't think I.O.I will immediately be able to threaten the top 4 trending girl groups (in no particular order) right now. - Red Velvet, Mamamoo, GFriend and TWICE. At least I know TWICE didn't immediately threaten any of the top groups, people who watch Sixteen didn't automatically became a fan of TWICE. They build their fandom up diligently through Vapp, appearing on several variety shows, great fan service and a general impression of being likeable as a group. Right now, I think top trending girl groups will likely take turns seizing the top spot.

The same situation applies to I.O.I. People who watch Produce 101 may not automatically become a fan of I.O.I. Especially so if their favorites got eliminated. Just because the top 11 is thought to be the fan favourite doesn't make it a reality. It's especially evident that the benefit during those missions has a huge impact to those who didn't win.

Next, if we take a look at Somi specifically as the I.O.I center who received an overwhelming support of 858,333 votes, a fraction of the votes likely came from JYP stan and largely from ONCE. Nonetheless, Somi has also build up her own loyal fandom without a doubt during her time spent on Sixteen and PD101. Her bright energy is what attracts people to her, and is generally well liked by other participants. The support for her alone accounts to 24.25% of the total votes the entire I.O.I have. Back on Sixteen, Somi only manage to get into the top 7 spot on episode 3 (ranked 5th), episode 6 (ranked 6th), episode 8 (ranked 7th) and episode 9 (ranked 5th).

So, I believe in terms of becoming a threat, I think not so much. But their debut is likely to receive very high attention. TWICE is going to comeback on 25 Apr, while I.O.I is going to debut early May. It's very likely for there to be direct competition between TWICE and I.O.I. But regardless of which group wins their upcoming battle, I don't think I.O.I will have the longevity to build a loyal fanbase. If at all, their support is currently the trendy thing to do, but it will be fleeting at best.
