College Students!! Did you get your Gen Eds out of the way or did you mix and match it with your major requirements

Which is the new approach? Getting your gen Eds out of the way (will probably take freshman and sophomore year). Leaving junior and senior year with classes solely based on your major.

Or

Mix and match your Gen Eds with your classes based on your major?

Which is the smartest and easiest approach in maintaining a high GPA?

Mix and match. If you do all your gen eds in the beginning, you're gonna end up having semesters with all 300-400 level courses all having to do with your major and that's a lot of work and a lot of pressure. It's better to have a balance of major classes and gen eds so you have some intense courses and some easier, more laid back courses.

In CEGEP, we had a specific track per program so we had to do them over the course of the program (and you had to take 4 courses of English, 3 of Phys Ed, 3 of Social sciences... each one needing the one before as a prereq anyway so no ways of shoving them all in a single semester).

In university, this foolishness stops and no one will force you to take Math if you major in Greek studies.

I got them out of the way but I also transferred so I didn't really have the option to take my major courses except for intro level stuff until my junior year.

IDK what's better though, but I'm glad I got them done early.

^^^^^^ this is what i did too, but i also wish i could have started on my major a little earlier bc now i'm stuck finishing all of my BIG major requirements (senior overview, senior thesis) in one semester. it's overwhelming

Took my gen ed's first. It was University policy. Honestly, gen eds are a scam. If you can get them out of the way at a community college, do that. Or take a lot of AP classes in high school.

I got them out of the way my freshman year, but out system is different from the US.

The only general education courses everybody needs is a 2 semester block of humanities that will take about 6 credits each semester.

My major's course requirement was too strict and there aren't many schedule options after the first year courses (first year courses overlap with chemistry/microbio/medicine majors, but after that it's all strictly for biology majors). Better to get the gen eds out of the way before you're stuck wondering why the heck are you taking general philosophy when you should be studying for physiology and cell & molec bio.

I found them to be a frustrating waste of time that left me with nothing learned and a lot of time gone down the drain, so that's another reason to get them over with the first year.

If you're talking about things like general chemistry, biology, physics, maths and statistics...those are the building blocks of the rest. Take those first. You need them.

Also, what would you rather have? "Easier" classes between high-level courses that still require coursework and attendance...or a free block to nap/study between classes?
