Fentyoncé 2,548
Back Story: So, I still have all 4 wisdom teeth in my mouth currently. My last dentist appointment was a few weeks ago and he advised me to go ahead and have them extracted. However, he didn't notify me that I'd have to pay extra for anesthesia ($100-200 extra..) so I didn't have enough money and decided to reschedule another time. However, my parents are the type that firmly believe that the dentists are all scams and trying to make money off of me so they refused to take me back (have no other means of transportation). not only that, but the dental school I had been going to is too far for my dad's liking anyway...I tried to convince them over Spring Break and while I got my mother on board, my dad, who knows the route there, remained firm that I didn't need to have them removed because he has never heard of any Vietnamese getting them taken out :/ Unfortunately, I am not as fortunate as him or the rest of my family. My bottom wisdom teeth are growing in tilted against my back teeth and it just started to ache last night. I plan to call my family's insurance tomorrow to see if they cover dental extractions so that I can find a dental place close to my home so that my dad won't mind driving me, but then I'd have to make an appointment in time to get them extracted. So...what I'm basically asking is - now that they've started to ache, how long do I have before they erupt? I know I should be trying to aim for an appointment this week (and hopefully I do get it, because I've just been going to the dental college for reduced prices so I'd have to research dental places that use my insurance). e m ✩ 230
i mean if it's a very dull ache, like it doesn't keep you up at night or it's just an annoyance more than anything, i think you've got quite a while. at least weeks, maybe months. i was advised to get mine out asap (i have three) at my last cleaning in december and because i'm a senior in university and this is my last semester, i don't have the time to be out of it as for some people it literally takes days to fully recover from the anesthesia. lately mine are just aching just enough that its annoying and hurts to chew a little, but my mom said hers did that but they never erupted and she never got hers removed. so it's really a case-by-case basis. ninedaysqueen 3,134
It depends on how close they are to the gum line. It's much better to have them out sooner than later.
nayeon's gf 1,967
nvm read the question wrongly you shouldn't wait too long since the pain means the wisdom teeth are squeezing the rest of your teeth together, you'll have a higher risk of getting food stuck between your teeth and they might get crooked
♥SNS-Shinomiya♥ 420
I have all my wisdom teeth, my brother have thier thiers, and all our teeth came out fine and they weren't crooked. I wouldn't say you should endure pain because your the one who has to bear it, however I will say you don't have to get them taken out. The pain doesn't last long, but to tell you the truth you won't know if they will cause issue with your teeth until they are actually in and actually are causing problems with your other teeth. My dentist had told when when she saw I was getting my wisdom teeth in to take them out, I didn't take her advise because I am not going to pay for a procedure for a "just in case" unless its to prevent cancer. They grew in with some discomfort however once they were in, my mouth adjusted and I eat, chew, and talk just fine. So basically just be sure that your doing this because you honestly think that you teeth will cause an issue not because a dentist says that it might. Fentyoncé 2,548
Thanks for all the help guys! I'll definitely get the appointment as soon as possible as the next week or so is lax a bit in terms of assignments for uni
denizen mars 5,911
main thing with waiting is that the longer you wait, the higher possibility of them being more painful/difficult to remove, and more likelihood of cavities. sucks your parents are being ridiculous about this. If they won't believe what a dentist recommends, idk what would change their minds. do you have any friends that drive that could be your ride instead? MasterOfCider 692
I'm sorry you're practically suffering and your parents (well your dad) aren't being of much help. From my own experience my wisdom teeth ached like hell for months and never came up from the gums. It's probably one of those "everyone is different" type of things. That said if they're bothering you at all, I think it's better to just get them yanked out of your head than being in agony for months, but if your situation doesn't allow it you'll more than likely be able to deal. I know you mentioned cost as a problem, and this might not appeal to you, but could you opt to only use local anesthesia and be awake for the procedure? Unless that's the one that's costing all the money.

I've had one offer so if all else fails, I'll ask them because I don't want to be regretting not having them out down the line I'm sure *_* I'm sorry you're practically suffering and your parents (well your dad) aren't being of much help. I definitely will ask about the local anesthesia to see if there's any reduction in cost!
