Is G-Dragon really that accomplished?

G-dragon was the first person to get me into Kpop so this isn't a hate post. I'm genuinely curious though-

GD is known for being a Kpop genius but what does he do exactly that earns him that title? He isn't a triple threat- he doesn't act, he barely dances (and I know he can dance well, he just barely does it) and his fashion is only as "original" as half a dozen other people wearing the same designer....

I know he writes songs (so do a dozen other idols) but what songs has g-dragon written and composed that didn't have a co-lyricist or co-composer attached?

Also, does GD play any instruments?

Again, not a bashing thread. Just genuinely interested. Any GD fans care to educate me with receipts?

The royalties speak for themselves. He has always been getting credit and praises for being a good producer and lyricist, on top of being a skilled rapper (not the best but definitely unique by having his own style). Literally Google it and you will find your answer...he´s the mastermind behing BB biggest hits, hence why he was elevated to such position within the kpop world.

This was from 2013 so imagine now...the list got longer for sure

http://onehallyu.com/topic/26314-the-complete-list-of-g-dragons-copyright-credits-2013/

There are a lot of songs listed, only a few where he can claim writer/sole composer but like I said, I like Bigbang and GD but writing/co-composing doesn't mean you are the best

Especially now that he has started repeating himself- crayon, mapsosa, bang bang bang all have the same stadium sound at the end of the song. He reuses lyrics constantly.. Crooked and Sober are 2 sides of the same coin....

What else does he do? Does he play piano? Guitar? The recorder?

Does he choreograph?

Asking because the thread about most accomplished idols had people like shindong who do a ton of behind the scenes stuff but aren't recognized like GD....

Lennon and Mccartney always cowrote their things, but that doesn't make what they did any less notable.

GD is a genius. that's all there is to it.

i'm sitting here trying to understand how creating music with a partner makes you less "talented" now. Adele and the Beatles co-wrote a lot of their songs, are we going to start coming for their accomplishments too  :derp:

Pretty much what most have said already.

He technically has his hands all over every BIGBANG hits of course he does

not to mention his influence over idol who started composing

And not to mention the hits he has all by himself

Nobody did that nobody will

I agree with most of what you've said, I just don't get this last part. "Nobody did that nobody will." Are you saying he's the only K-pop artist to have a string of hit songs or is this just a summary of everything you said?

Do you have to do a lot of things for being considered a genius? You just have to excel at something (even if its one) for people to acknowledge you. Many people are called "multitalented", triple threat but when you look closely, they´re really good at one thing and average at the other. Lies was written and composed by GD and it became BB break out song. GD is acknowledged because he is such a good producer and lyricist. He knows Big Bang color and knows how to make public friendly songs who receive a lot of from a large audience.

Ok there is stanning and then there is reaching. GD and the Beatles can't be compared.

Yes they are/were both boy bands and they write catchy songs but that's about it.

The Beatles revolutionized music and pretty much introduced the concept album/music video. They are legends.

Kpop is good but it's never going to be revolutionary.

Technically he is the only kpop idol to have like over 10 no.1 hit all under his name

GD was the first few idols to start getting involved in the production of the music, and actually excels in it. Many Koreans view idols as cookie-cutter manufactured dolls, even now, but back then it was worse. Lies was a hit, and the mediaplay YG did to showcase that it was GD who was behind that song elevated Big Bang to a position where they were seem as "out-of-the-norm" and "talented".

He is also known to bring in new styles of music into Korea. I know many of you listen to his music and say they are songs you can hear on American music charts and nothing special, but these are all genres that many Koreans tend to back away from. For example: Crayon, Bang Bang Bang, etc. All of these may seem like nothing special when compared to American music, but it is new and different in Korea. Think about it, in Korea, they prefer ballads and acoustic music over anything else. When someone comes in and release Bang Bang Bang, it creates attention.
