When the word is used in this post, it's refers to the 'harmless' ones. Recently there was a short conversation about pedophilia, where one part said that those who were attracted to kids were sick and disgusting human beings whereas the others said that you shouldn't judge them that harshly as it's a kind of sexual orientation and they can't help it. It's an interesting subject. Pedophilia is understandably one of if not the biggest taboo in society right now, so there is very little discussion about it. Views also tend to be highly polarized. I'm hoping for a slightly more nuanced discussion because the subject is related to many others of interest such as sexual orientation and whether people should be judged on their sexuality and thoughts despite never hurting anyone. Those who condemn pedophiles would argue that it's disgusting and unnatural, and pretty much everyone will be able to relate to those feelings. But should they really be judged by who they are attracted to? Some people still condemn homosexuality and bisexuality using those exact words even in the 21:th century. Many people would use them for people attracted to animals as well, or those who have feelings for their relatives. In which cases, if any, do you feel like it is OK to despise and hate someone for who they are attracted to? Do you consider pedophilia, attraction to other species, etc a sexual orientation? Or something much more malicious? Where do you draw the line? --- Personally I'm divided. On the one hand I feel like we shouldn't judge people based on who they are attracted to, especially if they know that their attraction is 'wrong' and that they need to work against it; but on the other hand I might be wary of that person and probably consider it both a bit sick and feel sad for the person in question. I mean it's kind of gross that they are attracted to little girls and boys but ... Idk there's a lot of sick humans... I feel bad for them (ONLY the ones who control themselves)... SeeYaWithYou 4,415 Posted November 5, 2013 Share Posted November 5, 2013 Honestly, I want to say I don't judge people by who they are attracted to, but pedophilia being such a taboo was instilled into my mind all my life so I find myself being naturally disgusted just by the thought of someone being attracted to little kids. If they are naturally attracted to little kids, there's nothing anybody can do about that. The one thing I am strongly against is non-consensual sexual activities, and I find it hard to believe that even if a little kid does consent to sexual activities with a pedophile, they fully understand what they are doing. So i guess i can say is that my overall view on this is that if you are really attracted to little kids, that's fine just don't act upon those urges. And an Adult taking advantage of a child who thinks they have to trust adults, and more than likely doesn't even know what's going on. A child just isn't mature enough to consent to something like that. Acting on impulses like that can ruin their trust, and many kids need years of therapy to get over it. Sexual orientation is based on GENDER preference. So this is more of a mental disorder or fetish... I knew someone who got busted with hundreds of photos of children in his computer. We worked in a company that is all about family and all about kids (worked with kids and took portraits of kids/families for a living). So it was awkward and sickening to think about. It's scary because they are sexually attracted to prepubescent children, so even if they can't help it, who will guarantee that they won't act on their urges? Homosexuality is only mentioned because the same things are said about bi/gay persons. you know, this thread makes me question the definitions of certain words like mental disorder, and uhh like sexual fetish and really I actually dont think it's a mental disorder, it's not like they cant function in society (to make it a mental disorder) and in the older days it wasnt really illegal either i think subconsciously it's a just a unfortunately induced sexual fetish caused by something, i dont even know no one likes to talk about pedophilia so... im pretty empty right now. Tentacruel 908 Posted November 5, 2013 Share Posted November 5, 2013 In my opinion it's more of a fetish, along the lines of Zoophila, gerontophilia, acromotophilia etc,., than sexual orientation since that is usually decided up by which, if any, gender you're attracted to. I mean the majority of paedophiles usually prey upon girls or boys exclusivley so they're still either hetero or homo. Anyway I believe that paedophiles who act on their urges should be punished, but those who haven't should be given some form of rehabilitation to break them from their attraction to the young.
