[KPKF] More companies refuse to hire smokers

Pann: What do you think of companies that don't hire smokers?

(In this year, 14 major companies asked the applicants if they smoked.)

1. [+517, -13] It's the companies' choice to not hire smokers. If the applicants want to get hired, then they should quit smoking.

2. [+430, -15] Smokers always gather together and they stink. While others are working hard, they disturb the atmosphere by going out to smoke. I also won't hire them if I were a CEO.

3. [+360, -15] Don't try to get excused as a smoker. If you're frustrated, then quit smoking.

4. [+99, -0] I love it. More people are quitting smoking since the cigarette price increased and the companies are also doing the right thing. I would love it even more if the police catches those that smoke on a street.

5. [+91, -1] Fucking assholes. We're so busy with our work but they'd say, "Shall we go out for a smoke?" and leave. After 15 minutes, they come back and non-smokers have to do all the work. They also do their own politics when they smoke. Those idiots think that's what socializing is. Why would major companies hire these brainless idiots?

6. [+66, -0] Smokers affect others' health by just standing next to them. They have toxic substances in their bodies, so their existence is harmful enough. Quit smoking, everyone. And please don't smoke on a street.

7. [+63, -0] What smokers misunderstand is that they think they affect others only when they smoke. They don't know that their hands and clothes also smell and have nicotine. Smokers say, "I never bother others." I hope smokers realize that they're always bothering others, not just when they smoke.

8. [+60, -0] Break time is not the only time when they go to smoke. When others are working their butt off, smokers say they need to smoke and leave. Others have to do more work. Working at a workplace is teamwork, not individual work. I want to smack those smokers.

9. [+55, -0] At my previous workplace, male smokers would be absent for 30 minutes to smoke. They never leave alone, they leave as a group. As they smoke, they spread rumors and talk behind non-smokers' backs. Some people even leave 6 times a day. They reduce the efficiency of work, of course companies don't want to hire smokers.

10. [+48, -1] I hope more companies wouldn't hire smokers. They can't even bother to quit smoking, their self-care is 0.

Being an idol is an extremely strenuous and active lifestyle that mainly consists of overextending your energy and being worked to death so it's their choice if they want them to be in the best possible health when undergoing that process.

That should be a standard tbh.

Smokers can influence idols to smoke too, and they can't absolutely do it when their voices are important for their work.

I can't say I argue with that. But many companies are also encouraging overall better health (such as exercise, diet, smoking cessation, etc) as it lessens cost of insurance and overall health of the workforce. Many companies give incentives to engaging in healthier lifestyles by decreasing monthly cost for health insurances. And yes – co-workers taking lengthy smoking breaks and sharif the same space isn't pleasant.

If this is known in the U.S, i bet most of these companies would get slap with lawsuits claiming discrimination.

Honestly smoking is a personal thing, but I'm actually glad this is happening.

Do you work? Smoking cessation is a very big move for a lot of companies. There is an overall move to have employees live a healthier lifestyle. They now encourage life coaches, nutrition programs, gym benefits, incentives/punitive action based on lifestyle, and A LOT of emails regarding health. No one is suing. As for hiring – it would be difficult to argue the company didn't hire one solely based on being a smoker. They make have declined to hire a person for that reason but it would be hard to prove.

I don't like smoking or like the smell of cigs.

But this should be a personal matter imo. As long as they do it outside of the work building and not effecting others. If anything companies should just encourage/give incentives to not smoke.

I think they mean regular companies like offices. But i'm sure it applies even more to entertainment companies.

Smokers are drug addicts complete with all the behaviors. Smokers get withdrawal symptoms if they can't smoke when they feel they need too. I honestly wouldn't want people working for me to smoke.

The thing about taking more/extended breaks is very true. I worked for a major software company, and the smokers would go out and smoke at least 3 times a day, for around 20 mins. And sometimes, they'd latch on to our manager when he'd go smoke and they'd be gone for up to an hour. It's very unfair, and they shouldn't be allowed additional breaks for a habit they chose to pick up. One could argue that through their abuse of additional breaks, they are, in fact not being as productive as their non-smoker colleagues.

But i think asking someone if they smoke during the hiring process is open ground to be sue. As long as the company did not ask such intrusive question during the hiring process. It's hard to prove the company did discriminate based on the participant's smoking habit, but it's also hard to prove that the company did not.

And no, I dont smoke and I hate smoking.

I wish US companies could do it because there are a whole clique of smokers at the two companies I have worked at since graduating college. They do take extra breaks and come back with foul smoke odor. The other problem is at both places a superior/manager/director is a smoker. So the smokers are brown-nosing and get better assignments. Its like you need to start smoking for opportunities at advancement.

Oh, my bad. I don't pay attention to anything else that involves Korea other than the media.

There are some companies in the US that do that too, mostly hospitals.

I have mixed feelings. Smoking is a personal choice, and as long as it's not affecting your work and you're not coming into your job smelling like an ashtray, it's not really my business. On the other hand, that's never been my experience. My smoker coworkers always took smoke breaks, and even though it wasn't some crazy amount of time like I know happens in some places, it was still annoying. We had work to do and they were just leaving so they could smoke a cig. I didn't smoke, so I never got extra breaks. And the smell... cigarette smoke makes me sick, so it was kind of nauseating if I had to be near a smoker for too long.
