YG change of marketing techniques ?

I remember YG said he did not wanted their idols to go into varieties because he would rather they focused on producing music but now Winner and Ikon are doing variety right?

With 2NE1 and  BIGBANG it worked, they somehow did not need a lot of exposure, their music always created an impact bigger than most other Kpop groups (especially 2ne1 in their debut) , but with Winner and Ikon music even thou it is good they have not been able to have the impact that BB/2NE1 had. Do you think YGE is sending their idols into variety because of this reason? so they can compete against other idol groups?

or was it just because BIGBANG and 2ne1 most of the members  were very awkward when doing variety?

BB members used to be everywhere on TV once tho, they still make few appearances on relevant shows like Infinity Challenge, which matters more than dozens of weekly idols and random shows.

I think 2ne1 was truly the exception, anyway YG clearly understood that with the market oversaturation he can't make his groups big and well-known without relevant shows

idk but i remember a lot of non fans complaining before how yg never sends his new idols to variety shows and such and how its necessary and blabla and how bb/2ne1 did go on them during their rookie years

Well 2ne1 created an impact because they dress different styles and went outside normal conventions. This give them unique image among all kpop groups. Plus they have good songs. Their faces are unique and not boring like mostly GGs have. Almost all GGs have pretty faces but 2ne1 is not and they are not trying to act pretty. Because of this more people can relate to them and accepted well in public. Plus the some members had debut during thier mid 20's.

Bigbang had lots of exposure during their debut. They didn't just write their music and wait for public to notice them.

as people have already mentioned both BB/"ne1 ......well mostly BB were on variety during their debut. Winner only didn't go on many varity shows during their debut and YG started letting iKON out during the end of their debut promotions. Anyway whatever the reason I'm glad cause it gives them the exposure they need and everybody including their seniors get.

if you weren't there during BB debut.. then please make sure to do proper research (i'm not being snarky, i'm serious).

BB did a lot of variety initially.

Winner (during debut promos) and 2NE1 didn't do a lot of variety but it seems with iKON, he started to let them out (maybe after WIN, Mix & Match, and SMTM, producers were asking for them?) and i'm glad the same is working for Winner now.

Also, iKON are ONLY 6 months old.. what impact are you talking about? My Type is still charting SIX MONTHS IN (Rhythm Ta and Dumb & Dumber too) and honestly i won't be mentioning all the other achievements they've done.. so if you're talking impact? iKON definitely had that impact.

Like everyone already said, BB was everywhere during their earlier years.

2ne1's really the only one that didn't do much outside of music in YG. From what I saw, many Winner members were doing solo activities like acting while they were on their break.

Maybe YG was just extra careful with 2ne1 since girl groups had always been a sore spot for him.

lulz it's always funny whenever non VIPS implied as if BB had the same impact they're having now in their rookie days. in fact, they had so much less impact than the newest boygroups from YGE in their debut days.  this aint an opinion, it's a fact. ask any VIPs following BB for a long time and they'll say the same thing. BB finally started to hit big during Lies. they didnt become a digital monster group right after they debuted and their sales were worse compared to the yg new boy groups' as well.

didnt mean i downplayed bigbang. just wanted to correct these misinformed people thinking BB already had so much in their rookie days. even though they had a predebut show, they still had to do so much to be bigger. they werent as big as now when they were rookies.

The newer groups should have better sales than Bigbang in their rookie days considering that now idol groups have more exposure on an international scale since the start and that boy idol groups even making it to top 20 in digitals used to be a very big deal back then, let alone getting the top position-- And Bigbang did it in 1 year.

And Bigbang weren't signed to one of the Big 3 companies with their own show during trainee days and didn't have a Bigbang as their senior either.

2NE1 is the only group that didn't have much exposure in terms of variety. Bigbang used to do a ton - talk shows and variety stuff. They have been on almost all kinds of shows as a group or in pairs. Most of the shows probably don't even exist.

Yeah, the situation isn't comparable at all. YG in terms of brand, influence and power wasn't what it is today and BB were YG's first idols. You also can't expect them to follow BB's career trajectory, they didn't do that well in the first year but then they blew up in their second year with Lies and then continued on with a string of hits like Last Farewell, Heaven, Haru Haru & Sunset Glow establishing their position. If people used the they did better than BB in their first year argument, most groups would be on or above where BB are but that's not the case.

im a vip and i know their history. i also know about yg being not part of big 3 in 2006. i know all, but there were indeed people thinking that when bb debuted, they already hit big and became a digimon group like now. some people legit thought bb were also very much loved while in fact they were hated much. im questioning why they had to come up with the comparison of the new groups in their rookie days thinking that they had to have that much impact while BB even slowly worked their way up to have their success. the newest boy groups achieved much but they were seen not doing well either.  people expected them to sell exactly like bigbang while bb took time to get that digimon title.  i was hoping people would give them sometime. how many BGs either from big3 or not that blew up right away/had hits in their first year?very few. this fits the sentiment that boygroups are less well received by the public
