Magnitude 8.3 Quake Hits Off Indonesia, Triggers Tsunami Threat

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was about 500 miles west-southwest of Padang, Indonesia and 529 miles north-northwest of the Cocos Islands.

A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the national disaster mitigation agency said, triggering a tsunami alert.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported a differing magnitude of 8.2. The quake hit 504 miles southwest of Padang, Sumatra, at a depth of about 6.2 miles, it said.

A tsunami unleashed in 2004 by a 9.1-magnitude undersea earthquake off the Sumatran coast was the deadliest natural disaster this century, taking more than 220,000 lives and leaving more than 1.5 million homeless. Waves as high as 15 meters (50 feet) crashed into towns and shorelines across more than a dozen countries, destroying people’s livelihoods and possessions.

 

Indonesia’s 18,000 islands sit along the Pacific’s “ring of fire†zone of active volcanoes and tectonic faults.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo was on his second day of visit to Sumatra. He’s scheduled to spend the night in Medan, North Sumatra before returning to Jakarta on Thursday.

it's my hometown, earthquake is pretty common there but if it's big and the epicentum in the middle of the sea it's pretty worrying

 

and there's another earthquake 7.8 SR with epicentrum near with the first one, i'm really worried now but i can't call my family there

this earthquake is quite far from the mainland approximately 678km . so potential for a tsunami is very small to reach the mainland. and luckly the earthquake was not in subduction zones. This zone usually make tsunami such as tsunami aceh.
