‘Cheese in the Trap’ producer lashes out at viewers

Cable network tvN’s drama, “Cheese in the Trap,†aired its final episode on March 1.

The finale caused much controversy due to its ambiguous ending which left viewers upset and confused. The drama has been garnering negative attention for a while, as its plot seems to have gone haywire towards the end of the series.

An associate producer of the drama decided to go against the norm by uploading a post on Instagram on March 2. The post was a photo of the script of the drama’s last episode along with a long comment that reflected his anger over the situation.

The comment, translated from Korean to English, went like this, “How funny. Why do people talk so much? Why won’t they just like it? Why do they wag their fingers at us when they have the choice of not seeing it in the first place? Do you people know how many staff have to work hard to make one production? I wish people would stop talking about things they don’t understand.â€

When the comment started to draw attention from various fans and media outlets, the producer deleted the post.

‘Cheese in the Trap’ caught in deluge of complaints

“Cheese in the Trap,†tvN’s drama series based on an eponymous webtoon, which ended Tuesday, garnered great attention when the remake was announced. That attention, however, turned into a barrage of criticisms no sooner than the halfway mark of the 16-episode series.

The long-running original webtoon released on Naver by Soonkki in 2010 is a romantic thriller featuring a love story between college students Hong Seol, a smart and hardworking young woman struggling with tuition and finding a job, and Yoo Jung, a handsome man from a wealthy family, an â€ideal†beau. What may appear to be a romance drama is categorized as a romantic thriller due to the darkness lurking beneath Yoo’s Mr. Perfect veneer.

Guaranteed success

The webtoon has been holding its position as one of the top webtoons on Naver, enjoying a loyal following over the past five years with its elaborate plots and detailed psychological descriptions of each character.

At first, the huge fandom of the original work all but seemed to guarantee the drama’s success. The first episode, which aired on Jan.4, recorded a viewership rating of 3.6 percent, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research.

Despite the excessive meddling from fans during the casting process, which earned them the disparaging nickname “Chieomeoni†-- a compound word created from “Cheese in the Trap†and “sieomeoni,†which is mother-in-law in Korean -- the drama series got off to a fine start with actor Park Hae-jin playing the male protagonist Yoo.

With the drama initially staying true to original work, the viewership rating gradually increased to a record 7.1 percent for its ninth episode.

Great expectations, great disappointment

Midway through the series, another main character Baek In-ho (played by Seo Kang-joon), who has a crush on Hong (played by Kim Go-eun), began to take the spotlight, triggering criticisms from viewers.

The criticisms were directed mainly towards the insufficient and even distorted description of Yoo, while drawing viewers’ empathy towards Baek. All signs were that the story was developing into a corny love triangle.

It is never the case with dramas that everyone is satisfied, but most viewers expected Yoo to be more prominently in the spotlight as he is a central character and a complicated one at that. Without sufficient description of his past experiences and emotions, it is easy to misunderstand Yoo as he rarely expresses himself.

The criticisms snowballed as parts of the script were leaked, showing that many important scenes with Yoo were omitted from the drama.

Adding to the drama’s woes were the near disappearance of Park from the screen midway through the series, which irked Chinese fans as well.

Chinese website Youku and Tudou have signed on to release the drama on their websites this summer and Park’s popularity in China likely played an important role in such decisions.

The drama’s popularity among Chinese viewers has been proven as pirated episodes have topped the Weibo drama chart with 1.9 billion viewers even before its official release.

Chinese fans are complaining about Park’s diminished role in the drama, with some even demanding a re-edit of the series before its official release in China.

Meanwhile, Park is scheduled to attend Youku’s promotional event of “Cheese in the Trap†in Beijing on March 10.

Official position

Park revealed his discomfort on the official Facebook page of WM Company, the actor’s agency. His post said, “The drama set is second home for the actors. A drama cannot be for just one particular person.â€

Amid the growing controversy over the unexpected rearrangement of the original plots and mounting criticisms from fans, original webtoon artist Soonkki announced her position on her blog on Feb. 24.

Soonkki tried to draw a line between the drama and webtoon, explaining that she “did not decide nor discuss the storyline or the ending, except that she asked not to use the original ending†to keep the ending confidential until the webtoon, which is in its final season, ends. She added that both praises and criticisms of the drama have nothing to do with the original work.

Soonkki added that despite her requests for different plots that would be more appropriate for the drama format, the production team insisted on staying true to the original work. The production company have not contacted her or shared scripts with her after the sixth episode, despite her requests, Soonkki added.
The last episode of the drama series aired on Tuesday, with an ending that was rushed and that left viewers baffled.

The production team on Monday issued an apology to Soonkki on Facebook but emphasized that the last episode of the series had been edited before Soonkki’s announcement.

Tbh, people praise it when it good so they critic it when it became bad,

even if you knew how to produce a show, audience knew how to enjoy and an enjoyable show, they are not fools,

bad food will not get praised no matter how much you serve it to them,

they just want the male lead story, it's not like they want bora x euntaek become lead just because they loved him,

did she even read the complaint or the webtoon?

No wonder why it started going downhill around the middle. Everything is perfect in the beginning but it got weird around the 10th episode. Jokes on the team for not involving Soonkki until the end.

I had great expectation but in the end it's a shame things must end this way.

How dare she ruin my favorite webtoon just like that and still have the guts to bitch about why people don't just like it  :twitch:  :twitch:  :twitch:

How about you ask that to yourself Ms. PD??

Honestly dramas get ruined when the people behind it try to please everyone too much, I get that they want money but I'd rather have a cohesive story I didn't like than some messy choose-your-own-adventure. Their first mistake was letting people get too involved with the casting. I feel bad for the actors and staff, they got good viewership ratings and now can't even brag about it lol smh

As soon as I heard CITT was turning into a drama, I was looking forward to it.  Their biggest Mistake was not involving the original Manhwa writer after few epidoes. That's why the characters Stopped having Any developments afterwards. Its like all of them lost their direction. Yoo Jung had disappeared, Seol was so wishy washy , Inho was made out to be more and more and more pitiful, Inho's sister kept getting crazier with no valid/deep reasoning, etc.

Lol..this drama pd didn't try to please anyone. They did whatever they wanted. They did too much of that. Poor manhwa writer. The character she wrote turned out to be so lost in the drama. Thats why even the lead actor showed disappointment along with the viewers who were not satisfied. CITT is a really popular manhwa and the drama ruined it from halfway. Idk if their rating went down later on tho.

Your reasoning doesn't make sense.

Fans enjoyed the drama at the beginning when the PD's ignored the manhwa artist's "requests for different plots that would be more appropriate for the drama format" and "the production team insisted on staying true to the original work."

The drama therefore started irritating fans when the PDs respected the artist's wished to involve more characters and protect her ending. The ending is ambiguous to protect the original artist!

That producer is crazy!!! How you gon blame the viewers for your incompetence? They dont like it because the plot turned into shit, thats it. And Kudos to Park Hae Jin for staying professional til the end...his character disappeared from the drama, the scenes he shot got cut but he still going to a CITT promotional event in China. Respect!

No. They worked with her at the beginning if I understood everything and she only put a request for the drama ending because she did not want their ending to spoil hers( the manhwa version ). They obviously worked with her at the beginning but they stopped contacting her after episode 6. Thats when the producer went crazy and changed the plot completely.

I'm basing my response on the quote used. I don't remember if you are the same person I responded to, but if it's another person I responded to, both of you are not using logic to defend your arguments.

I can't generate quotes or check accuracy of quotes because I don't read Korean.
