They also split when the stage has two arms going out, so the fans have equal opportunity to see someone from every group on their side of the venue (like some of SNSD go to the left side, some to the right and some girls play at the main stage with others ^^; similar to TVXQ when Yunho goes to the right and Changmin to the left/or he stays at the middle stage). I believe Yoona always ends up somewhere around Yunho's side? And Yunho is quite comfortable with others so he often pats or plays with SM artists around him.
