Oscar-winner Sam Smith is currently under fire about some fairly audacious comments he made after winning Best Original Song last night.

[...]

Sam said in his speech that no openly gay man has ever won the golden statue before him.

In his speech, Smith dedicated the win to the LGBT community-- which is a topic he rarely touches on.

After being informed in the press room of the preceding gay men who did win Oscars (including Dustin Lance Black and Elton John), a member of the press mentioned fellow Oscar-winner and openly gay composer Howard Ashman, who won in the same category as Smith in 1989 for The Little Mermaid's "Under the Sea," as well as in 1991, for "Beauty and the Beast."

Hearing this, Smith arrogantly stated, "I should know him. We should date."

Howard Ashman tragically died of AIDS in 1991, at the age of 40.

welp. here's to the people chewing out dlb for calling him out. you'd think that since he thought of an acceptance speech he could be bothered to google 'gay oscar winners'. classy

I sort of don't like it when people say they're doing something for the LGBTQ community because it sort of makes them as if they're separated or different because if someone said they're were doing something to support straight people they would get loads of backlash... But LGBTQ gets special treatment which makes them seem even more like outcasts in a way...

Maybe trash is too harsh on him, but i don't find him interesting whatsoever

I don't like him musically, i find his music very boring.

He's not that exciting as a person too, shoud have stayed as a Youtuber tbh

I was actually about to ask the same question as the others, but ahh, I see now. I quite like him. His music's chill for me.

Fair enough if you don't like his music or him as a person but calling him trash just because of that is rude.

Its not really to make themselves outcasts/different, society does that already. Even if times have changed compared to before, they are still discriminated/bullied/harassed because of it.

I assume its more about reminding people, that sexual orientation is not a barrier, and anyone can achieve and be successful.
