Do you have a hard time with accented English?

I've notice this phenomenon that whenever there is even the slightest accent, people are like "OMG WTF IS THIS GUY SAYING. HIS ACCENT LOL"

(they don't actually say "lol" aloud, but you know what I mean)

I just ask them to repeat themselves if I don't understand. But most of the time that doesn't happen.

Then again, I live where a lot of Spanish-speakers have English as a second language, and my family has southern accents, so I could be accustomed to accents.

Omg I KNOW. A guy with like a slight Asian or Arab accent as a TA will get a ton of groans from those stupid douchebags who can't even spell properly themselves.

I don't mind accents in the slightest tbh. Sometimes I may be thrown off for a second or two, but after adjustment, I usually never have problems. Also, I think they're kind of nice. It's great to see that someone is learning another language, and it really gives an individuality to a person.

If people can find European/ Austrailian accents "sexy" then I fail to see why they should treat other accents like trash, or be too lazy to attune themselves to it.

I have a very neutral hybrid American and English dialect... but stateside, after say, coming back from UK or skyping w/ friends from UK, when my accent is temporarily a little "heavier" i guess... my US friends sometimes are like "what did you say?" ...which always confuses the hell out of me....because like I said... I'm very neutralized and it shouldn't be hard to understand me at all. I think people in the US do have more of an issue understanding foreign dialects than say... Europeans... But i think it's because US  has like 2 common languages, and only a handful of dialects.
