12 Major Boy Bands to Fill the One Direction-Shaped Hole in Your Heart
Put them on your playlists now.

4. EXO

If anyone can relate to the pain of your favorite boy band losing a member to pursue a solo career, it’s EXO-Ls, fans of the South Korean group EXO. This group not only lost one, butthree members over the course of a year and a half, leaving the once-12 member group with nine. EXO debuted back in 2012 with 6 Korean and 4 Chinese members divided into two subgroups, EXO-K and EXO-M, the first singing in Korean and the latter in Mandarin in order to appeal to both markets. A massive group, EXO’s strength relies in their intricate choreographies and stellar velvety vocals. And while their music style changes with each release, the base is an R&B/pop hybrid. “Growl†is a funky hip-hop leaning track that transcended the K-pop audience. “Call Me Baby†is a throwback to the heydays of pop-meets-hip-hop of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. And “Love Me Right†is an upbeat, funky jam with catchy English verses. In times were male groups are renouncing the boy band stereotype, EXO is owning it and taking it farther than anyone else ever has.

7. UNIQ

UNIQ is a five-member Chinese and South Korean boy group who promote in both countries and sing in both languages. Their music and overall concept is laden with hip-hop and dubstep influences, as seen in their debut single “Falling in Love.†In the short two years since their debut, UNIQ has followed EXO-M’s footsteps and are building quite the following in China. They were even nominated for the “Best Artist in Mainland China & Hong Kong†category at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards. The song “Eoeo,†written by member Seungyoun, is a body-roll-worthy jam with punchy rap deliveries and a slick sax.

Correction: SY only wrote the Korean and English raps in both versions

9. BTS

Also hailing from South Korea, BTS, or Bangtan Boys, burst onto the clean-cut scene with their non-conformist anthem “No More Dream†in 2013. BTS’s music blends hip-hop authentically into the K-pop scheme — which makes sense, as two members were underground rappers prior to joining the group. One of their songs, “Dope,†is a testament to how hardworking and dedicated they are to their craft compared to their club-crazy peers, fueled by a prominent saxophone-led hook. In the electro-pop “I Need You,†the group discuss loneliness after a breakup. In a genre where idols are criticized for being inauthentic, BTS breaks the stereotype by putting in the legwork. And instead of fighting the “idol†tag, BTS strives to put out authentic and quality music and performances that speak louder the prejudice against boy bands.

Keep that one direction away from me. One direction was never in me heart and never will be.

Disgusting.

Haha bad article title I know. Some of these listed groups are even better than 1D. Still, us Unicorns are happy a small group like UNIQ is promoted in any platform

Nice description of BTS...! Never a dull moment stanning these guys, and there's always amazing material to listen to that you never get tired of. I would welcome any newly converted fans as long as they actually do something to support BTS and aren't mean and scary. â™¡
