Change Review

We want to share with you, what we think is one of the most personal songs KG(Kang Gary) has ever penned, Change. This is from their album, Hexagonal.

Change has several dimensions but what makes it even more interesting is the way each dimension seems to contradict another.

One the onset, it seems to talk about the obvious changes happening in their career - they are becoming an "aged" performer, an old-timer, a veteran. Along with this is their change in label. After four years with J-Entercom, they signed with Jungle Entertainment, a "change" that would later on prove to be an important one in terms of their penetration to the mainstream market.

There is, however, a second layer to the "change". KG raps about how "change" makes things insignificant and useless since nothing remains. He starts to wonder if anything is ever worth doing given that no matter how you try to hold on to things, it will disappear. They have worked hard to establish their name as musicians but now that they are, people see their worn out shoulders and hear the weary voices in their melody.

Again, he contradicts this with the third dimension. Here, he seems resolved about the necessity for people to move on. He insists that those that are left behind simply must be forgotten so people can live. Here, he raps about the necessity of abandonment.

That's true! Rush will always be my favorite! There's this one song from Jung In's album featuring Gary that I really adore! Can't think of the name at the moment though! I want to see a collab between Gary and Miryo! She used to be part of Honey Family right? And no worries I definitely will ^^ can't wait for the new badges!

Turn Off The TV Review

Turn Off the TV is breakthrough in Korean mainstream music and Korean Hiphop music in many levels.

1) It's about sex... blatantly - Although many mainstream songs have been written and released about sex in Korea, all of those songs simply allude to sex. Turn Off the TV is the first song that went mainstream that talks about a guy's desire to have sex with a girl who doesn't want the same thing.

2) Proof of LeeSsang's creative independence - Gary said in his Asia10 interview that even Tiger JK, the founder of the label he is signed to, disagreed with the idea of writing a song like this when he brought it up. Proving their total independence, he went ahead with the production of the song.

3) Straight up, no poetry - One way that idol groups and other hip hop artists get away with talking about sex in their songs is by using poetry in their lyrics, Turn Off the TV rebelled against the practice and shed off the metaphors and symbolisms in their lyrics.

DID YOU KNOW:
- Kang Gary has  over 160 songs credited under his name as lyricist and/or composer and/or arranger
- Tablo has over 260
- Tiger JK has over 190
- Choiza has over 270

- Simon D has 110

* My research is limited to the names I know Kang Gary uses.
* Kang Gary's list only includes the released ones
* Don't complain about the quality of the image, it's just to be as an evidence to the claim

Tears: An Analysis

We went out to have dinner (we are in LA) and a LeeSsang song was playing in the restaurant. Specifically, Rush. The thing is that it was an American restaurant. My cousin stood up to ask the manager why they were playing it and the bartender pointed to a group and said the group gave them the CD and asked them to play it. There were 5 people in the group, all black, all rappers.

Proud LeeSsang fan moment.

Next, KJK was/is in LA. We saw him. My cousin shouted, “KIM JONG KOOK, OUT!â€

He looked back and said, “Yaaa! Who is that?†(He said it in English). My cousin then yelled, “It was Yoon Eun He!†KJK laughed, gently bowed and said, “Fighting!†We said the same thing before continuing our way. Polite guy (and also big. I miss Commander and 2 kids).

And now… Tears.

This is a little different from the other songs we have featured because this was a collaboration, not exclusively a LeeSsang song.

The music was already laid out by Duble Sidekick/Double Sidekick (DS). They called Kang Gary (KG) to do the lyrics. In KG’s promotional interview, he said that DS asked him to write about “tears†and preferred it to be based on KG’s own experience. However, KG said he was feeling a little too happy with his life and couldn’t really draw out from his past. For the first time, he created a story instead of telling his own.

Another milestone for KG is the rhyming of the lyrics. This is one aspect of Korean music that is hard to appreciate unless you speak the language. My hangul is terrible at best but his rhyme in Tears is so distinct and his pronunciation is so forceful that he made it easier for me to recognize and appreciate what he did.

You're The Answer to a Guy Like Me: A Review

This week, let's revisit a beautiful part of KG's past he rarely but sacredly talk about, his relationship of 7 years.

He wrote several songs about the girl and the last one is "You're the Answer to a Guy Like Me." In Strong Heart, he was asked about the girl but he evaded the question and said "She's already married."

This song essentially talks about one thing, the hopelessnes and helplessness of losing the one person you love but before we get into the message, let's talk about the song's instrument. The way Gil laid it out approximates KG's emotions.

The song uses 2 instruments as a base, bass and drums. In almost every verse, all the other instruments change. A piano, xylophone, sax, guitar and a whole lot of other instruments come in. The basic of the rhythm is retained but it is twisted and

further twisted in almost every line. In fact, if you pull the instruments apart, it will sound chaotic.

The hardest part about remaining friends with people you knew when you were young is to try and grow up together. Often, when we explore and try to experience new things and pursue different interests, we tend to outgrow our friends. It happens to the best of relationships. The Beatles who confessed to being the best of friends and tight as tight could be found themselves not wanting the same things.

Marriages that lasted more than a decade still end up in divorce because they find themselves needing the relationship less. That is why it is amazing to see friendships and partnerships that stand the test of time. LeeSsang is one of the few that has remained a band, best of friends and business partners.

Below are 10 lessons we should learn from Gary's and Gil's relationship.

1. By their own admittance, Gil knows Gary more than Gary knows Himself and Gary knows Gil more than Gil knows Himself

Gil was the one who recommended Gary to Yoo Jae Suk for running man because Gil knew Gary woul be a better variety star than he will ever be. Gary actually declined but Gil helped convinced Gary to give it a try because he just KNEW Gary would shine. Gil knew even before Gary did.

Gary also said in one interview that people think they are not close because they always fight an are rarely seen hanging out. Gary clarified that they fight because the other knows what the other will think or do even before the person does or says it. It's frustrating for them to have someone know them more than they know themselves.

MC Mong - Faulty Fan English Translation

The faulty fan stopped blowing
Too old to get a second chance
I am getting used to the pain
Deep in my bones are tears I cried with friends
Give me the courage I lost long ago
I'm past 36, I can't b*llsh*t

Clown Song Review

Clown is a perfect musical oxymoron.

It is an outright ode about the how each of us may end up with different social classes, jobs or personalities but in the end, if you look down deep, we are all the same, we all seek out to find happiness but often, we drown in sadness.

The genius of the song lies in the how Gil and Gary managed to create the perfect oxymoron by creating a melody that automatically puts you on high the moment the first note is played. It is a festive tone.

LeeSsang Song Review: To. LeeSsang

This is probably one of the most personal songs LeeSsang has ever made. It doesn’t not only talk about themselves but also talks TO themselves. It is, in fact, a letter written by LeeSsang to themselves for the future.

A Reminder

It is a deeply pensive letter. The kind that you would write to yourself when you know your life is about to change and the changes will be so different, so dramatic, so “fantastic†that you are sure you will change. You will start living a life you never imagined you will and see a world form you never imagined could exist.

It’s like you are standing right at the entrance, not quite inside the door yet, but one more step and you’re in. You are still standing in that world where you spent your entire life, where your friends are, where your family is, where you have become who you are but one more step and you will leave all these behind. It’s a scary prospect but a necessary one.

UPDATE:

Thinking of You English Lyrics

Gary's Rap Part:
You’re in between my good and evil
As the sun rises
All these people filled with doubts and their countless questions and useless answers
Millions of dots connect to beautifully become one
I hear the ocean
Even if you only pass like the wind, leaving without resting
This is the moment
Because of you, my cheating habits have stopped
I think love found me
