Almondandlime 6,854
Normally an act's popularity in Korea is mirrored by their popularity internationally. For example, when EXID were nugu in Korea, they were also mostly nugus in the international kpop fandom, but when Hani's fandom became viral in Korea, their international popularity skyrocketed too. However, Beast were quite popular at one point in Korea, but it never really carried over internationally... Why is that?

Almondandlime 6,854
And the opposite happened to BTS? Honest question. BTS looks like they have a substantial Korean fandom too. Just no 'public recognition'
Fentyoncé 2,548
And the opposite happened to BTS? Honest question. BTS uses their social media platforms extremely well. they were able to market themselves to international fans by constantly updating twitters and youtube with things like bangtan bombs as for Korea, well they're not exactly from a huge company so of course that's why it's taking longer for the K-recognition to catch up. It's not easy getting public recognition if you're not from the Big 3 so it's great that BTS has even made such big strides so far with their strong sales. Their fandom is growing though, but they still don't have that "it" song to propel them to public recognition in Korea
Ace2GK 3,231
Never? They were popular among international kpop fans during fiction/beautiful night era tho. Krystal Meth 11,336
They were popular internationally though. I used to see lot of b2utys around. I guess they just got sick of Cube not promoting them well and left.

Why is that? you could say the same about IU and many others. Some are more popular in Korea than abroad. People have different taste and some artists have better promotion than others. Slowpoke X 1,319
But Beast was popular internationally, and EXID isn't really popular internationally. But the reason why they weren't more popular is because they lack international hits like Fiction. They didn't do enough Korean comebacks. Only Good Luck and Beautiful night were successful after Fiction. Their ballad songs that were popular in Korea, those weren't successful internationally because k-ballad is boring for international fans. In Cube everyone does 1 huge comeback, and then they fell off the face of the earth afterwards. Even EXO does multiple comebacks a year.
Charmy 6,317
Didn't Beast debut in 2009 or something? I'm pretty sure their international popularity matched their domestic at one point or another.

donquixote 120
if by "internationally" you mean in the united states and parts of europe then sure. but beast is pretty frickin huge in the middle east, south america, southeast asia, and japan. and they're still popular in korea, as the new fancafe rankings can tell you also the ppl mentioning how bts was the "opposite" are right. i was in the bts fandom from oh!rul82? to just before hyyh pt.1 and at first bts only had a bunch of american/european fans (they were super trendy in the american circles during skool luv affair and dark&wild) and no korean fans and they only got a huge increase in domestic fans shortly before/during/right after hyyh pt.1. dragonfly0915 3,245
"Normally an act's popularity in Korea is mirrored by their popularity internationally." This is absolutely not true. There are plenty of groups that are/were more popular in Korea than they are internationally. Sometimes Korean popularity doesn't catch up to international popularity, and sometimes international popularity doesn't catch up to Korean popularity, it just depends on the group.
