is how long a song hangs on melon a testament to how popular it really was/is?

i see songs from months ago, from last year, still in melon's top 100 and it makes me think, "oh, that song really is popular". and i don't mean when songs suddenly rise up for a few hours because of streaming, i mean when a song fluctuates between the same, say, 5 or 10 spots consistently. 

 

some people claim melon isn't the most accurate chart, some say melon is the only important chart, so i was just wondering if it's more of a trendiness indicator if nothing else.

i've seen so many k-netizens comments about Melon being the representative chart for what's popular and not in Korea and i agree with you, songs that stay within the same few spots over a long period of time seem more popular to me rather than the ones who fall off the chart right away

Yup. For example, Ah Choo has been on a chart for almost 5 months now and in their recent performance, a lot of people are singing along.
